Supernova’s experiments aren’t all triumphs by any means, but, given how painless it would have been to stay the course, LaMontagne is to be commended for taking on a challenge at all.

There's nothing here that's exactly new, but by assembling an array of unexpected influences in one blissful place, Lamontagne has crafted an unlikely perfect summer soundtrack.

The resulting arrangements are masterful affairs that frame LaMontagne's material with great taste and flair. [Jul 2014, p.90]

LaMontagne thread his needle through many styles, mostly good ones. The result might just lull you into tomorrow.

Dan Auerbach's production is warmly intimate, LaMontangne's singing a quiet marvel. [Jul 2014, p.95]

Like [Beck's] Morning Phase, even Supernova’s failures prove an interesting listen, and when LaMontagne hits his stride, it’s an album that contains some of his best material in years.
  7. Due to the depth of LaMontagne’s talent, any recording by him has automatic conviction and appeal. But Auerbach’s sound proves too defining, making the star seem like he’s trying to squeeze into another man’s clothes.

Pop artists ride the wave until it ebbs; serious artists look for new shores. I am a new fan after listening to this album! Expand

I love Ray's music and appreciate that he wants to grow by exploring history. However, this album is a major snooze. We don't live in 1967 San Francisco and we really don't need the psychedelia today, though I see the critics are smoking the funny stuff. I simply don't want to listen to this album time after time like I did God Willing and others. Its great, even important, to explore, but put out an album every year or two an alternate between pure rip-off and more original work so we can see the development. Waiting this long for a second, less interesting and accessible rip-off is annoying. Expand
