This is the metal album of 2013, and proof that Carcass still hold the tools of the trade to show all and sundry how to write a winning (“comeback”) album.

It doesn’t resort to chest-beating nor does it attempt to dilute its primal metal urges. It simply cuts through.

Surgical Steel is both muscular and accessible enough to appeal to metal fans of almost all stripes.

From the opening track 1985 to the final riff of Mount of Execution this album oozes quality. There is not one part of any track that I do not like. This is not only my album of 2013 but one of my favourite albums period. I still listen to it most days over a year after release such is the quality of the songs. A complete metal masterclass. While Surgical Steel has more in common Heartwork than Reek Of Putrifaction Carcass still showcase their full range of talents here. This isn't a good comeback album, this is an excellent comeback album. Collapse
