The main difference here is the overall feeling of buoyancy, as Hutchcraft and Anderson apply their top-shelf pop songcraft to a decidedly more energized and euphoric collection of tunes than we’ve heard from them in the past.
Though the duo sometimes return to the comparative safety of moping synthetic orchestras, and soul-reflecting mirrors lying conveniently on the Camberwell Road pavement, for the most part, there’s a new sense of fun to Hurts.
Hurts have always been pretty unabashed about their mainstream ambitions, which is fine, but as they explore them further, it becomes easier to strip away the affectations and see them for what they truly are: a cheesy pop band.

Though people may say thatWhile this album is probably the weakest from the band, I still feel that it has many points that are highlights. Though people may say that the album has shown that Hurts has sold out and become too mainstream, which there are certainly points where that may be the case, the entirety of the album is cohesive and is overall, a good album. Is it the best? No, but it doesn't deserve complete hate either. The melodies and the beats that run throughout the album are quite fantastic, I must say. Rolling Stone, alone, has a beat that is absolutely stunning. Now, when it comes to the songwriting and the lyrics of this album, there are some instances (*cough* *cough* Policewoman *cough* *cough*) that could be better. But does that mean that it's not an enjoyable album to listen to? Absolutely not. So, though it may not be their best piece of work to date, it certainly should not destroy their careers either, in fact, it may help them rise into the mainstream audience's peripherals even more. But, from my own personal view, I do hope that they return to their style that they displayed on "Happiness," though I still do quite enjoy this album as a whole.…Expand

There was however,If you enjoy electronic music with a darker, harder edge to it, Hurts always offered enough of that to enjoy their albums. There was however, always a lighter, boy band element to them that made them a bit of a guilty pleasure. Unfortunately, those "fluffy" elements have become the main ingredient in this album, rendering it by far and away their blandest album yet. They say you can't judge a book by its cover but you can sometimes judge an album by its cover, with Surrender's pink hue offering a visual clue to the type of music contained within. I will stick with their first 2 albums and hope for a return to form with their fourth.…Expand

Dark, romantic and mysterious vibe paired with that nostalgic 80s feel made them appealing; three albums later, it seems like the formula that made them so popular in the first place got so dull and stale even they themselves are bored to death with it. Surrender offers virtually nothing interesting - the dark, romantic and mysterious vibes were replaced by cheap, quick fix second rate scotch tape and most of all, ridiculously pathetic joke. All the anthems and values that they stood for make them look like fools now, and as the album goes on, you feel like you're on a bad, bad date and the booze is wearing off. I'd say it's high time for the duo to stop making music, but it seems to me they already have. A long time ago.…Collapse
