  • Summary: The Swedish band worked with Pharrell Williams, Jacknife Lee, and Dennis Herring for their fourth album.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 17 out of 27
  2. Negative: 0 out of 27
  1. Sonically they've tweaked their punk-pop vibe, even employing the hip-hop-flavored Pharrell Williams for one cut. Happily, that gambit--the danceable ''T.H.E.H.I.V.E.S.''--pays off.
  2. And desperate single aside, it all works pretty damn well.
  3. Still, 'Tick Tock Boom' and 'Try It Again' put them all together as effectively as anything they have done since the big smash 'Hate to Say I Told You So' and suggest these revivalists are themselves due a revival.

The Black and White Album is an extraordinarily (perhaps inordinately) confident album. [Winter 2007]
  5. The Black and White Album can feel, at times, thematically spastic, spinning more like a mixtape than a proper LP.

The rethink has paid dividends. [Nov 2007, p.90]

Here they often come across as Hard-Fi playing the songs of The New York Dolls--infinitely more irritating. [Nov 2007, p.104]

The Hives have outdone themselves once again. To the hardcore Hives fanatic, tracks like "T.H.E.H.I.V.E.S." and "A Stroll Through Hive Manor The Hives have outdone themselves once again. To the hardcore Hives fanatic, tracks like "T.H.E.H.I.V.E.S." and "A Stroll Through Hive Manor Corridors" are new territory, but ultimately, as usual, territory that The Hives conquer and dominate. The best rock album of the year. Excellent songs, like You Got It All Wrong, Hey Little World and Bigger Hole to Fill.

The Hives are still proving themselves to be undoubtedly the most creative and forward thinking rock bands of the last decade. Throw in The Hives are still proving themselves to be undoubtedly the most creative and forward thinking rock bands of the last decade. Throw in Pharell Williams on a couple tracks and you nearly have a masterpiece. Expand

Somewhere in the universe, there's room for a band that actually sound like there having fun out there. If The Hives can't live in Somewhere in the universe, there's room for a band that actually sound like there having fun out there. If The Hives can't live in that space, who the hell can? Expand

A great CD. It sounds different and much longer than their last two CDs, but the songs are longer and give this CD a different feel. Highly A great CD.
