Like all post-rock albums, this album requires some patience. And all the songs employ the same compositional pormula. Get past that, however, and prepare to be drawn into a 45-minute emotional trip.

at times Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place is relaxing enough and beautiful enough to let me look at my life objectively and be absolutely content. At other times it gets so powerful i can't sit still. i don't know whether to run down the street or fall to my knees. it's like the 5 song soundtrack to the most important 46 minutes of my life.

The best album i have ever heard! and i have heard many. They come up with the best parts that i thought i guitar could handle. I have their second Cd and that is just as good, i have also heard some of the stuff from their first album 'How strange, innocence' and every riff and loop i have heard have been great and peaceful. Keep it up guys From Laurie

The bombast and instrumentation of Mogwai meets the compositions and epic nature of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Perfect. No time is wasted on techinca noisel wankery or unrecognizable vocal snippets.

Though not as emotionally compelling as their previous album ("Those Who Tell the Truth..."); "The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place" still ranks as one of the best of 2003. EITS' songwriting abilities continue to improve as an ensemble and this album is an excellent second effort from a promising and talented group of guys (who all happen to be extremely nice fellows). A fantastic exploration of death and its aftermath, the birth of society and its aftermath. Glorious and grandiose, harsh and harmonious, intense and intriguing. This is a perfect album of contrasts, one song after another. Highlight songs are tracks 3 and 4.

Few have succeeded so completely in telling stories throughout music without lyrics such as Explosions in the Sky in The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place. The sound suggests, the vision comes, First Breath After Coma is really a post rock masterpiece. I especially like the drummer.

The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place could be the greatest piece of music ever written. This is by far the best instrumental album I have listened to. The sounds ebb and flow like the ocean, sometimes gently caressing the beach, and sometimes crashing against the rocks at full force. The timing between melancholia and passion is perfect. Expect an emotional post-rock symphony :)

More than 10 years on, this album - without saying a word - tells the most complex and beautiful narrative.

Somehow, time has only enhanced its epic stature ( - and that is no overstatement). Though the sound remains the same, the album grows with you and, as the years pass, you're able to connect with new sections in ways you hadn't previously considered. Truly as close to the word
More than 10 years on, this album - without saying a word - tells the most complex and beautiful narrative.

Truly as close to the word 'masterpiece' as more recent music can get. This is art - not some collection of rhyming words sloppily thrown together to a catchy beat. It aims to reach out and affect the listener, as if to say, "We're living in the same world and having the same experiences as you. It's not always perfect, but there is beauty in the struggle. And in the end, once it's all over, only beauty remains." (see the final track for that absolute beauty)

Ultimately, the title hits home after listening - The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place, and this album is testament to that.

The quartet fills out the album by executing almost eactly the same formula [as the first track] four more times... and the dramatic shock wears off quickly. [Jan 2004, p.103]
