If The Lost Boy was the new wave rapper's most substantial test of talent and longevity, YBN Cordae passed with flying colours.

Both bold and filled with bravado, yet layered and emotional, YBN Cordae is able to convey his desires, hopes, and fears in an ambitious and well-thought out format. A strong debut from an artist who knows that he is capable of long-term success.

The rapper's skills aren't in question on The Lost Boy, but the album sometimes overshoots in its ambition, aiming for too many styles to hit them all with excellence. It's still a strong collection, and when Cordae strikes a perfect balance of mellow production and lyrical power on standout tracks like "We Gon Make It," it points to even more fully formed work ahead from a strong talent just getting started.

Encapsulates everything a Gen Z rapper should be aiming for; young gun energy mixed with traditional skill.

Despite the glossy guestlist, The Lost Boy remains Cordae’s show. At 15 songs, it could have used an edit, another voice in the room telling him to tone it down. But still, it’s an assured debut.

The way the album transitions from one mood to the next is extremely impressive. Hope Cordae can keep it up.

Do I believe this album deserves a 9-10 out of 10 probably not. I understand the criticism that keeps it from such great heights but sometimesDo I believe this album deserves a 9-10 out of 10 probably not. I understand the criticism that keeps it from such great heights but sometimes it's important to look at the meaning of the album to the person who is listening, in this case, it's me. So I have to say that this album is fantastic great flows, beats, and melody. Despite the heavy inspiration from other artists it takes their styles and blends them wonderfully into one free-flowing project. This album helped me get through a lot, helped me relax when times got tough, and helped me conquer great heights. This album is like therapy for me and to this day I'm not sure why. Maybe it's relaxing nature and the feeling of being lost really resonated with me, or maybe I'm just imagining things. If I didn't have such a connection with the project maybe I would have given it an 8.5/10 but giving an 8 to this project feels wrong. I feel a 9 is much more fitting in describing how I truly feel. One strength this album had was its sequencing, It was spot on and made me feel as if I was actually listening to an album instead of a 15 song compilation. I loved how the songs had meaning, every song sounded as if they meant something to Cordae, that's a feeling I don't get very often with new rap albums. However, at some points I thought Cordae lacked some originality to his sound. Although with this being his debut album I can't expect him to have his sound figured out just yet. Listening to this album makes me feel good about the future of rap and whose hands it's in. Expand

He has some good flows but he gets boring to listen to after a while as lyricism is supposed to be his strength, while he is not as good lyrically as many other rappers. He's shown that he clearly still has potential though. Expand
