This is one of the best evanescence albums the band has created. The songs are meaningful and they aren't bad at all. This is not her best album but it's like the 3rd one.

Boring and formulaic, very simple. A massive descent in originality and I'm gonna just come out and say that Amy Lee is a singer and shouldn't be allowed to write her own songs again. Not that it was terrible, I quite liked how some of the instrumentals fit so well together, and had some fair musical progression, but was still very uninteresting. She needs someone telling her which tones sound good together because she doesn't have a clue. Expand

Disapointing... all the songs sound the same. there's no progress since the last album and you can really sense the absence of Ben Moody. they tried to use the familiar 'formlas' they used in the prevoius comercially succesful album but it doesn't seem to work. the majority of the songs sound forced and in the same time the melodies are purely weak...

I loved Fallen, remains one of my favourite albums, but to be honest The Open Door is in my opinion the greatest failure in recent gothic rock. None of the tracks stand out whereas Fallen could easily have produced 11 singles. Bitterly dissapointed, I've lost a great deal of respect for the band

Samey songs, extremely poor vocals that border on yelling during the majority of the album, too many effects, rubbish lyrics, no variety whatsoever. So so sad. How the mighty are fallen. (No pun intended there...)

Oh, for God's sake hurry up and kill yourself, woman! That's right, you wont coz you are a goth-faker who wouldn't know the word "conviction" if it was carved into your forearm by a member of the Manic Street Preachers or The Cure. The world would be a much better place without this unlistenable, shallow dirge.

Theoretically, this album could have been almost good, but I think they forgot to mix the thing at the last minute. Lee's vocals on Fallen were complimented by it, and worked in harmony. Ben Moody's abscence jumps right in front of your eyes... but that's not bad at all. All of us knew that overpassing the iconic "Fallen" was a though task, and I still think "Fallen" was better than "The open door". However this album is another great job by the lovely Amy Lee, her voice again is the best reminder of why we love Evanescence. This disc is more private than "Fallen" which was very commercial; and also has more music diversity (Lacrymosa'd fit in any Halloween celebration), so in the end is different from "Fallen". The main defect of "The open door" is the lack of strenght throughout the whole disc. Some songs are just tiring pieces. Overproduced vocals combine with underwhelming guitars to create track after track of what sounds like the same song. Lead singer Amy Lee has a pure and amazing voice, but sadly it is hidden behind layered and distorted vocals. The guitars are predictable and amateur, which may be the reason for all of the other types of background noises and distortion. The songs lack internal coherence. Amy Lee should have waited it out until more good songs came to surface in her emotionally ridden writer's world. There is nothing on "...Door" which is as good as "Bring Me to Life" or "My Immortal" from the album Fallen album. "Call Me When Your Sober" would have been only one of the good songs on "Fallen" but not a song for which it would have been immortalized by. "Call Me When Your Sober" would have been only one of the good songs on "Fallen" but not a song for which it would have been immortalized by. Saying that, there are a few saving graces: Amy Lee has a fantastic voice; she is still young and can make it better the 3rd time around -- let's face it, coming close to the grand majesty of "Fallen" would have been hard for ANY band; and she is inherently talented and rocks, plain and simple. I bought this CD and will listent to it a lot, because there are some beautiful moments on it and because of Amy Lee's personal charisma and beautiful voice. It is a beautiful instrument, and too bad they couldn't find nearly enough material to match it. And yes, Ben Moody's presence, as expected, has shown us that Amy Lee's voice was only half of Evanescence's brilliance. At least on "Fallen." Expand

This was an excellent CD! No, it is not "Fallen", but the band is in a different place than it was 3 years ago. "The Open Door" is a fine example of a musical group that is still growing, still evolving. Amy's voice is nothing short of phenomenal. I love the fact that the album is over 55 minutes long. That means she really has faith in the material and is happy with it. That makes for a great live show, which it was when I saw her a few days ago at the Riviera Club in Chicago. She had so many more ballads to sing and so many more rocking songs that she coudln't possibly put them all into one concert. Of course "The Open Door" won't sell as many as "Fallen" did, but so what. So what if many will think that "The Open Door" is not as "good" as "Fallen." It's different ~ the young lady has not gone out and made another "Fallen." She has turned the gothic dial, and this is the one she is singing now and is also the one which will retain the true fans of Amy Lee and of true goth music, and lose the idiots. My musical interests have expanded greatly since I first got into Evanescence, yet they remained my favorite act despite the lack of new material from them in the past few years. I'd been looking forward to the release of their next album with great anticipation and very high expectations, but I must say that those hopes were a bit mellower than they could have been because one of the things I enjoyed most about Fallen was Ben Moody's guitar riffs. I was also afraid the quality of the songwriting would decrease with Moody's departure. Fortunately these misgivings were unfounded. Terry Balsamo is a more than adequate replacement - in fact, I think the band is better with him than with Moody. Amy Lee does not disappoint with her writing or piano playing, either, and her voice is once again sublime. She's the best thing about the band and as long as she's around I no longer see any reason to think that Evanescence will do anything but improve. I've now listened to The Open Door more than 20 times and I can say with complete confidence that it has supplanted Fallen as my favorite album ever and it improves on all the band's previous efforts in every possible way. Amy Lee's vocals are top notch on The Open Door, but they are not enough to lift this second album above average. Amy's longtime friend and writing partner, Ben Moody, is certainly missed as the songs are somewhat banal and meandering. Heavy metal with a womanly spin? Or just Tori Amos turned Goth? I like Evanescence a lot, and there is a lot to like here. The music can be thrilling. But this seems repetitive and dark. Guitarist Ben Moody is missed -- the guitar hooks are way too predictable and pedestrian. Singer Amy Lee is a mightly talent, and in one out of every three songs, we get to really enjoy her talent.

"The Open Door" sold more than 1,000,000 in four weeks only in US and was classified as the "Album of the Year" by the MTV Australia Music Video. This tells everything we need to know. The album is so mature, so stronger, just perfect! Amy has grown a lot.

Out-of-this-world lyrics and some ghostly rock music makes The Open Door a must have if you liked Fallen. The best of it: Lithium, Lacrymosa and Call me when you are sober. Three songs worth of an entire album, but also with some other nice additions such as Good enough, Sweet Sacryfice, Like you and Cloud nine. Fantastic.

Glad to see there's the idiots on here that give out rediculously low scores for no apparent reason. Oh, and Jesus is on here too! Anyways, the album is very different from the first, but the sound is more experimental and Amy's voice is much stronger. I love the melodies and layering of her voice on the tracks. Amy Lee's vocal's could not have been better suited for the song she was sining, as well as the main message in the song. When she sings'Call me when your sober' she has a comicaly evil tone to her voice. When she sings 'Like you' you can tell she's truly upset. Well done!

Hard rock, good lyrics, creepiness, beatiful vocals...what's not to like? Sweet Sacrifice...good guitar, good lyrics and wonderful singing make this song awesome! Call Me When You're Sober...powerful and awesome guitar....the lyrics, about her relationship with the lead singer of seether, just show Amy's confidence about leaving him. Weight of the World...love the intro...works well. it goes from slow to fast and Amy's beautiful voice just ties it all together. Lithium...I admit, i was a bit leery of this song at first but listening to the lyrics and what it's about it screams #1 on the charts! Cloud Nine...love the sound effects and the guitar and lyrics just put it together and make it an awesome song! Snow White Queen...truly creepy. i got chills the first couple of times...powerful lyrics...maybe not single material but a wonderful song Lacrymosa...Amy using Mozart's Lacrymosa and turning it into her own song was absolutely brilliant. The song is emotional and the lyrics work well. Like You...might be my favorite on the album...you can hear Amy's pain over the death of her sister. The pure agony of the experience just rings through her voice and makes the song very beautiful and awesome. 20/10 Lose Control...the piano intro and then the awesome guitar and vocals...plus the sound effects...wow. perfect song. The Only One...the beginning starting off slow and eventually getting faster. Absolutely remarkable. Awesomely unique song. Your Star..Changes pace often but never feeling. You can feel Amy's emotions and you can tell this song means something. Beautiful song. All That I'm Living For...very creepy and beautiful. Seems to lead into Good Enough well. Increduble song. Good Enough....beautiful song...shows emotion...hope..love..something not heard from Evanescence until now. Definately a good way to end the album with something like this. There's nothing here that will likely have the *same* impact as "My Immortal" from 2003's FALLEN, but that's okay-it's good not to repeat yourself. Instead of offering what some fans are angry about not getting a second time around, THE OPEN DOOR offers different emotional ground and hits harder than its predecessor with songs like "Snow White Queen" (about crazy stalkers with vicious intentions), "Like You" (a gorgeous eulogy to Amy's sister), "Lacrymosa" (the choral arrangements here will take anyone's breath away) and "Lose Control" (possibly the angriest song in Evanescence's roster). And then there's the closer, "Good Enough" a pretty ballad that offers something completely unseen in the Evanescence world before-a touch of happiness. It's a welcome surprise, as is everything else on THE OPEN DOOR. No offense to Ben Moody but he may have done his band a big favor by bailing out, because not only has Evanescence surpassed their debut, but they've made one of the best records of the year. Expand

The album's lead single, "Call Me When You're Sober", is one of the only tracks you actually hear the band's "all". Another problem within the band's sound is their similarity between eachother.

The album's ballad tracks, "Like You" and "Good Enough", are lovable for their in-depth lyrical content, but while the sound is unique, they're lackluster in the ability to relate to. The album's standout track is "Lithium". It's a wonderful flashback to their previous album, lyrically. While the track is certainly ballad-worthy, it has a beautiful "gothic rock" melody.

Overall, The Open will please hardcore Evanescence fans, and maybe even fans of the album's unique sound. However, mainstream listeners might find it difficult to accept Evanescence's new sound.

What becomes clear by the end of this album is that is precisely what it isn't. Fans of said genre will be disappointed when coming across slow building songs like Lacrymosa or Your Star (especially Your Star). These are songs that beg you to 'listen' to them and leave your expectations at the door, because they are a journey, not just rock songs. These two songs build to two of the most dramatic and intense climaxes of the entire album, yet will be ignored by the average listener looking for an album full to the brim with an over abundance of misplaced energy. Something has to be said about Your Star in a live environment, in which it is the most effective of the album... Lacrymosa, Your Star, Like You, Good Enough, Lithium, The Only One and Lose Control are all lopped into the category of 'sounding the same' because of their slow starts and instrumentals centered around piano, yet one will find each one to be a unique experience far superior to the likes of My Immortal...

Where this album excels is its many moods and atmospheres. Like You, from what I've read/heard, is probably one of the most polarizing songs on the album, being the slowest and softest of them all (a title that would normally be handed off to Good Enough, but of the two, Like You is still quieter... Despite the obligatory climax). To the point, Evanescence has up until now never released a song quite so desolate. Like You is another world within the album, one that is, similarly to the songs mentioned above, accused of lacking the energy of a proper rock song. I can't help but think Like You desperately needs its climax guitars replaced with strings while keeping the quieter, rippling guitar parts that fill the rest of the song. That said, this is one of the best songs of the album... Not for being catchy, not for it's head banging qualities, but for being deeply expressive and one of a kind. Though it belongs on a different cd, without a band... Just a full blown orchestra with a singer, her piano, and her lone guitarist.

Somewhere within Snow White Queen and Lose Control, though the former is arguably one of the weakest songs instrumentally, is that 'strange' that was totally lacking in Fallen. When the song 'Haunted' tries to deliver creepy, it gives us cheesy, but Lose Control and Snow White Queen are genuinely unsettling... And this is an artistic success, whether it's commercially viable or not. I'm reminded of Fiona Apple, who came into the music world a critical success. She turned around and gave them all the finger, going on to produce such anti-airplay wonders as the entirety Extraordinary Machine and never putting the finger back down. In their own special way, Snow White Queen and Lose Control are the big artsy f*ck you of this album, and it's made all the better because of them.

Good Enough is Amy Lee's crowning achievement. It may not be as polished as the increasingly mediocre and shallow love songs we're accustomed to, but this is without a doubt an emotional treasure and a triumph for simple, honest expression. She explores new territory lyrically, and experiments vocally... She is not afraid to show hope, even happiness in this song. All the while, the thought still lingers in her mind, "Is she good enough?". Call it whatever you want, the song is honest and it doesn't have to be anything else. It sees the angsty cliches of the genre and delivers yet another whopping f*ck you, as elegantly as possible.

What becomes immediately clear when gauging fan reaction to this album is that today's listeners have little patience for anything but exactly what they expected. The Open Door takes the quiet intros to a number of songs from Fallen and turns them into entire verses of quiet. Again, this is one of the biggest criticisms of the album, yet the only way this becomes a drawback is by failing to see what is offered instead of the expected. Fallen was energetic, emotional, and even hyperactive... The Open Door gives us a sensual, grumbling, moody experience... In that sense it is like the smelly, overpriced, aged European cheese to Fallen's 'all it does right is melt' American cheese. I suppose the point would be: At first, The Open Door smells funny and couldn't possibly taste good, yet when you eat enough of it, you start to smell funny too. It's a different experience, different genre, and different band than the Evanescence that made Fallen... And it's better. The best bits of this album are the quietest, and it's a collection that can never be enjoyed until it is embraced for what it really is: Not a rock album... But a masterful joining of creativity and necessary restraint for the sake of the children.

Top Songs: Like You, Lose Control, Lithium, Lacrymosa (there must be something in the L), Good Enough, Your Star, All That I'm Living For

Great, dynamic album. Far beyond the average debut Fallen, which was musically monochromatic with average, one-note guitar from a mediocre guitarist; I'm aware the drummer and bassist were only session players so I won't fault them too, but I'll say that the only thing that made that album listenable was Amy's voice, lyrics, and some of the strings with the background choir. On The Open Door, Amy and Terry went musically adventurous, Amy also got thematically stronger, vocally more dynamic, incorporated her classical influences as a classical pianist as well as other stylistic elements, and the songwriting and performance overall is superior. A great array of layered music with strong songwriting and interesting production that compels you to go back and listen to it again and even find nuances you hadn't noticed before. On one side this is really awesome and on the other it is a bit inferior to Fallen. Amy Lee has such a great voice and can sing songs in many different genres without being out of place. Combined with the rest of the band they create memorable tracks. For the new ones: The style is somewhere in the circle of alternative / gothic / symphonic rock. I avoid topics like this because the lines are blurry and for many there is no (or not enough to separate) difference. Within Temptation and Nightwish were similar for me. You got many good songs here with sad themes like departing, struggles, and serious life problems. My favorites are Sweet Sacrifice, Weight of the World, Lithium, Loose Control and All that I am Living for. Like I said all songs deal with harsh problems you can look up if you want. Like Linkin Park they make so beautiful sad songs about depressing or enraging themes. Overall a really good album but not as good as Fallen. I would recommend both albums still- Expand

The Open Door é um álbum magnífico. Não é melhor que o Fallen, mas é ótimo. Amy Lee mostra sua evolução vocal e a banda mostra a sua diversidade instrumental, variando da guitarra até o violino.

Pontos Altos: Lithium, Call Me When You Sober, Cloud Nine
Pontos Baixos: Lose Control, Like You, Your Star

Contrary to their first album "Fallen", "The Open Door" is more passionate and darker. It's about a struggle of finding yourself and deciding what you want to do. In songs like "Lithium", "Weight of the World" and "All That I'm Living For" the listener hears Amy Lee trying to leave the past and live with the present. We are also introduced to some of her abstract content like "Sweet Sacrifice" and "Lose Control" both focused on human fear. The Album is charged with dark emotions but almost at the end of every song we see a hope for her to get better and at the end of the album she admits that she is going to be happy through the song "Good Enough". The song is pure love which Amy Lee has written to her future husband. It's elegant and exquisite. The albums ends with the most beautiful piano ballad Lee has ever written, which contains only piano and strings accompanied by Lee's tender vocals. In the song she is in dilemma because she doesn't feel good enough to deserve happiness. But she also says that she won't be able to resist it in case he (her future husband) offers it to her. It is truly the pinnacle of her songwriting career. The composition of the songs are brilliant, most of them start slowly, without any hint of a surprise and than they gradually build up the volume and instruments. One of the highlights of this technique is "Your Star" and "Like You". The Album has a unique vibe in contrast to their first mainstream album "Fallen". It's almost opera-like. A beautiful work of art. 8/10 Expand

Unfortunately, I'm not sure Evanescence can ever top "Fallen". They started out TOO good and made TOO much of a hit with "Fallen". Denser and more scuzzed-up than Fallen, the album amps everything up to gloriously epic, over-the-top proportions. [Oct 2006, p.129]
  2. Those who embraced "Fallen" will doubtlessly fall even harder into "The Open Door."
  3. Many of these theatrical, midtempo songs run together.
