The group's ability to layer long, melodic arcs over squibs of dissonance has never been more surgical or soulful. [May 2011, p.92]

This is perhaps BTBAM's most compact, streamlined effort to date, and despite the convoluted, sci-fi indebted concept which forms its lyrical foundation (Google it), this is a seriously aggressive half hour of power.

There's the occasional turbulent moments of riff-deja-vu, but ultimately it's a fascinating, satisfying and impressive prog-metal odyssey. [9 Apr 2011, p.51]

The tracks complement each other and build a cohesive piece of art. Between the Buried and Me are on a level of songwriting skill that few bands can hope to reach, and their new EP epitomizes the band's talent.

Meanwhile, David Bottrill's dynamic production (his credits include King Crimson and Dream Theater) is perfectly suited, and only enhances the band's ever-intensifying talents.

Between the Buried and Me is dependent on their ability to generate momentum, by virtue of which they can keep listeners engaged in these unwieldy but ultimately rewarding compositions. By that standard, The Parallax is a success, though its true significance will be determined by how the band capitalizes on that momentum when they complete the two-part series with their forthcoming LP.

The slight inconsistency of The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues is enough to convince listeners that if this were a proper album and not merely a stopgap release to satiate the fans, the overall quality of the material would be stepped up considerably.

But after several more listens, and becoming more familiar with the songs, my love for this album grew to new levels. 10/10, there is so much to love here, and one or two listens just isn't enough for such an overwhelmingly powerful album. 30 minutes goes by in what feels like minutes, great work BTBAM. As ridiculous as the album title is, The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues is one hell of an EP. While their previous album faltered at timesAs ridiculous as the album title is, The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues is one hell of an EP. While their previous album faltered at times with trying to do too much, The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues accomplishes what that album didn't. Their last album sounded like it was trying to outdo their biggest album, Colors, and while it was a far more coherent affair, it became a victim to it's own ideas. This EP is a much more focused approach. It succeeds in sounding different without losing their signature sound. At what a sound that is. Their production is still top notch, and sounds incredibly clean, from the careful jazz transitions to the monstrous drum fills. This may be the best starting point for anyone interested in this band. Not everything is flawless though. The second song in particular hits a few of the same issues their last album did, but the finisher to the album is the best effort they've ever done. It may take a few listens, but The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues is definitely worth your time. Expand
