Kim Gordon’s voice may have been the spark that lit the blaze, but now she’s using a guitar to conjure up sonic waves to keep pushing us forward.

The album’s just out of reach quality is genuinely affecting, its impressionism charged with tension. [Aug 2018, p.52]

The Switch confirms Body/Head as the best post-Sonic Youth project by a country mile, but to merely classify them as an afterthought of that group does them a great disservice.

The Switch, in its entirety, is full of beautiful resonances.

Since the release of Fractured Orgasm, this duo’s 2011 cassette debut, they’ve proven themselves adept at subtly but profoundly shifting the mood of whatever studios or venues they happen to be exorcising. What The Switch demonstrates is that Gordon and Nace have gotten better at being overt.

Gordon’s most impassioned singing on the album helps here, too, but it’s the pair’s frame accuracy that makes the track so dramatic. The results are far from predictable, but they serve as further proof that Body/Head are fully in control.

The Switch serves as a potent reminder that experimental music isn't always cerebral. Transfixing, haunting, and lingering, this is some of Body/Head's most emotionally eloquent music.

Those looking for a dramatic change from their previous work will be disappointed as there are few surprises to be found. Whilst this can sometimes feel like a missed opportunity, there is still plenty on here to intrigue. This is a brave, immersive and timely record.

The Switch is fascinating and endlessly rewarding, even if it occasionally bears the marks of art being made for the sake of it. The nerves the band strike aren't as raw as in the past, but these two show an exacting control over their craft that few artists have ever possessed.

The Switch isn’t anonymous or soulless, but it does have an unhuman aesthetic.

The live shows Body/Head have done in the interim, where much of the material comprising The Switch sprang from, seems to’ve helped them nail down a more cohesive approach. It’s still wide open, drifting music, but with a relative brevity that helps it lodge more with the listener as an album.

It's nuanced "noise" that packs a hefty emotional punch. [Aug 2018, p.24]

The Switch is a restlessly searching work that requires a concentrated listener, yet for all its harshness, this eccentric and admirably inconclusive record has a deeply meditative quality.
