Simply putting a group of barely-familiars in a room together doesn't necessarily guarantee collaborative magic, but Yorkston & the Secondhand Orchestra complement each other's strengths well on this richly satisfying matchup.

It’s contagious joy to hear players with such abandon and intuition, braiding their lines together.

The immediacy is obvious, and the band stretch Yorkston's reassuring vulnerability in new directions. [Feb 2021, p.37]

Yorkston’s collaboration with the Second Hand Orchestra seems especially fruitful, giving him a jolt, shake them out of his usual tricks and proclivities and opening up new possibilities. If the stories don’t quite scan, the musical more than makes up for it, carrying you past the sense of this music into a restless, moving, non-verbal understanding of what the artists are going for.

Yorkston is one of our finest talents, still stretching out. [Feb 2021, p.82]

The beauty of The Wide, Wide River allows the coziness back in without making concessions to Yorkston's continued development and desire to push beyond traditional folk music. This collaboration with the Second Hand Orchestra is more heirloom than hand-me-down.

But, this album is something else. I cannot understand why someone couldn't possibly be engaged with it :-) All the songs are top-notch, but There Is No Upside and especially A Very-Old Fashioned Blues are the best songs from the alt-indie-pop-rock field that I've heard in... years! Excellent album. Expand
