    Melodies full of charm. A wonderful combination of freedom and intimacy. Amazing work.

    I was losely following James Yorkston al this years (from his 2nd album and on) but while I always liked his output, for some reason or the other I was not that engaged with him. But, this album is something else. I cannot understand why someone couldn't possibly be engaged with it :-) All the songs are top-notch, but There Is No Upside and especially A Very-Old Fashioned Blues are theI was losely following James Yorkston al this years (from his 2nd album and on) but while I always liked his output, for some reason or the other I was not that engaged with him. But, this album is something else. I cannot understand why someone couldn't possibly be engaged with it :-) All the songs are top-notch, but There Is No Upside and especially A Very-Old Fashioned Blues are the best songs from the alt-indie-pop-rock field that I've heard in... years!     The beauty of The Wide, Wide River allows the coziness back in without making concessions to Yorkston's continued development and desire to push beyond traditional folk music. This collaboration with the Second Hand Orchestra is more heirloom than hand-me-down.

    Yorkston’s collaboration with the Second Hand Orchestra seems especially fruitful, giving him a jolt, shake them out of his usual tricks and proclivities and opening up new possibilities. If the stories don’t quite scan, the musical more than makes up for it, carrying you past the sense of this music into a restless, moving, non-verbal understanding of what the artists are going for.
