Undoubtedly one of my favourite albums of all time. Great sound and enthralling lyrics that make you think.

With this record, there is Britpop, Radiohead, Spiritualized, grunge, trip-hop and more basking under an astral, space-rock umbrella, and Pumarosa have turned it all into a contorting, ornamental obelisk.

All ten entries on The Witch are exceptional. As a unit, they compose an engrossing aural experience. It’s an album a band would normally release as their third or fourth LP, once they’ve found their groove.

Slighter songs such as the Britpoppy My Gruesome Loving Friend or the trip-hoppy Barefoot aren’t as arresting, and the new-agey lyrics coupled with Isabel Munoz-Newsome’s impassioned, highly mannered vocals can grate. But overall, producer Dan Carey smooths their varied styles into a surprisingly magnetic debut.
