On Today We’re the Greatest, they make great music sound effortless.

Joy’s fluttering vocals reflect the ancient feeling of the folk genre, but the soaring chorus balances that feeling with a modernity, paving way for the more pop-leaning aspects of the record.

An album that’s both heartfelt and sincere and utterly irresistible in the process.

More rankled moments include the circular anthem "I Don't Care" ("I gotta do what I want to"), but these are outweighed by hard-won gratitude and affection on a set that above all delivers on big hooks.

It’d be a disservice, though, to dismiss the album (or, even, embrace it) as nothing more than mindless fun. Save for penultimate ‘Stacking Chairs’—a satisfying synthesis of the band’s two modes—most of the singles are buried toward its beginning. Left open is a space for much tenderer moments.

Today We're The Greatest boasts a gentler nature than Lost Friends. [May 2021, p.31]

The issue is that, in conflating deliberation with maturity, ‘Today We’re the Greatest’ ends up feeling a little bit middle-of-the-road.

It is pop and it may have some simple hooks, but it still grows on you, Lost In Los Angeles and the final title track keep playing in your head days after and eventually make you come back for another album listen.
