'We Make Pop Music’ adds another to their storied catalogue of press-aware music about music and similarly sounds like the band as they stand in a nutshell. Then there’s the second disc of B-sides, the original versions of the first two singles, more reined-in versions of songs from It’s A Bit Complicated left over from an aborted session with Pulp‘s Russell Senior, covers (the Beatles, the Cure, We Are Scientists) and assorted offcuts, none of which are essential but which add more layers to Argos’ wracked character.

Top of the Pops wonderfully captures the essence of a band that’s produce plenty a “Direct Hit”, Art Brut’s anthemic denial of anxiety and passion for fun documented in full.

Top of the Pops is a thorough and lovingly compiled set, and it's only fitting that a band as incredibly geeky about music and pop culture as Art Brut is should get the deluxe treatment.

While the first disc is appealing as an introduction for Art Brut newcomers, the second disc is a slightly uneven but mostly rewarding treasure trove for longtime fans.

Top Of The Pops highlights everything that originally captured us, and makes a convincing argument as to why the band's following full-lengths are worth the money, too. [No. 98, p.52]

Unfortunately, at least in the narrative that Top of the Pops spins, everything that followed Bang Bang Rock & Roll did so with increasingly unbecoming shades of bitterness. They'd have been better off reissuing Bang Bang for a second time than opting to tell this glum take on events.
