  • Summary: The duo of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen return after a 20-year hiatus, with this Grammy-winning comeback album sounding as if they had never left.

  1. Their ensemble sound remains sharp and inimitable.
  2. The music turns Aja's fusion-pop mode jumpier and snappier, sourer and trickier and less soothing--postfunk, whether anyone will admit it or not.

Becker and Fagen seem to have found their happy place during the recording of Two Against Nature. And as it's presented on this extremely infectious collection, their joy is contagious.
  4. Two Against Nature marks a timely return of two chilly, heartless hipsters.
  5. Familiar-sounding as these songs may be, they function as well as any blend of jazz and rock...
  6. What makes Two Against Nature work isn't its cerebral ellipticity but its stunning musical clarity.
  7. The lengthy, indistinguishable tracks could pass for a Daniel Lanois-produced collaboration between the Dave Matthews Band and Kenny G.

When Steely Dan were producing some great songs you'd allow for self indulgence from them. An all time classic here, and bit of jazz fusionWhen Steely Dan were producing some great songs you'd allow for self indulgence from them. An all time classic here, and bit of jazz fusion jamming there resulting in an overall satisfactory result. On "Two Against Nature" we have all the bad and very little of the good I associate with Steely Dan. There are maybe one or two decent songs to be fair and you have to hold your hand up to the technical ability on show on this record but for the most part when "Two Against Nature" isn't frustrating you then it's boring you. The quality is generally there as you'd expect, but it's highly overrated (mostly by pretentious Dan groupies). It sounds like a Donald F (I couldn't just say his last name as his last name gets blanked out as if it was a swear word here....brilliant......well wait, maybe it's merited here) solo album, not a Dan album (in a weak Kamakiriad way, not a good Nightfly way). Flat and uninspired. We waited 20 yrs.......for this? ugh. I've listened and been a huge fan from Day 1, but on the whole, this was incredibly disappointing. Expand
