The literary quality of Ian Felice's lyrics calls attention to themselves in the way a good story can draw one in and make one forget others in the room. However, the musical elements do more than decorate the words. The songs would be formidable even without them.

Nodding back to the Stones and The Band, these familiar sounds serve an open-souled gospel vision, rooted in upstate Nee York reality and dreams. [Jun 2019, p.27]

The verbal, melodic and production understatement (the latter overseen by long-time studio mentor Jeremy Backofen) compels close listening to Undress, not just to comprehend the point(s) the group’s trying to make, but to appreciate the finely-tuned care with which they have offered their observations and asked their questions.

Sweet, potent vignettes of American folk storytelling. [Jun 2019, p.89]

Undress sounds and feels like the Felice Brothers, capturing their loosely tight charm in a manner that honors both sides of the equation, and is certainly an above-average release in their canon.
  6. 60
Musically, the occasional horns, a fuller production, and a more structured overall approach makes this eighth release the tightest, most focused Felice Brothers album yet.
