On their umpteenth album, this rabidly prolific Dayton, Ohio indie rock institution pumps out 24 more of the brief & brisk hook-driven pop/rock garage nuggets they are famous for. As usual, production is low to mid-fi and songwriting quality is top notch. Main member Robert Pollard spits out these minor masterpieces as fast as you or I could expel a mouthful of watermelon seeds. As usual, production is low to mid-fi and songwriting quality is top notch. Main member Robert Pollard spits out these minor masterpieces as fast as you or I could expel a mouthful of watermelon seeds. All but two of the 24 songs are under two minutes: If you don’t love the one that’s playing you’ll likely dig the next one—and you won’t have long to wait. Members have also played in Boston Spaceships, Keene Brothers, Phantom Tollbooth, Ricked Wicky, Nada Surf, Cobra Verde, Death Of Samantha, Shudder To Think, The Dambuilders, The Library Is On Fire, tons more. “Warp and Woof” extends the well-deserved legacy of Guided By Voices as one of the most creative and productive bands in the business of entertaining indie rock ears. As ever with Pollard, the energy, conviction and imagination are unnerving. [Jul 2019, p.29]

Only ‘It Will Never Be Simple’ (at 2:32) feels a little like padding. Overall though, this is the pinnacle so far of the current GBV reformation, reaching in parts the high calibre of classic era albums like Alien Lanes and Under The Bushes Under The Stars.

While Warp and Woof may not boast a banger to match "The Rally Boys" from their last double album from earlier this year, Zeppelin Over China, or the majestically dumb "See My Field" (from 2018's Space Gun), there are golden nuggets of melody and movement that are simply transcendent.
