Here, Tunstall has rekindled the fire with one of her tightest and most inspirational records to date.

WAX is filled to the brim with equal parts sing-along sensibility and raspy vibrato--with a style and sound akin to late '90s Chantal Kreviazuk.

It’s a well-crafted album with variety, conviction, skill and Tunstall’s husky, muscular, soulful voice navigating seamlessly between singer-songwriter, pop and fuller-bodied rock. She’s consistent, and there’s nothing terrible here--it’s just not terribly exciting either.

In a confusing attempt at experimentation, the album shifts through different genres featuring elements of big band sound with the use of brass, synths and acoustic guitar-jazz which at times borders on ‘easy listening’. Despite playing it a bit safe, it is clear that KT Tunstall is very much in charge.

Not as great as Eye to the Telescope but good enough, KT Tunstall still got it

No outright classics that stand out, but no filler either, every single song from beginning to end is at least "good" and most very good. SoNo outright classics that stand out, but no filler either, every single song from beginning to end is at least "good" and most very good. So consistency is its leading characteristic. A very enjoyable album, even if there's nothing exactly earth-shattering or profound here. Expand
