For Ride to produce such a strong album is a wonderful thing. To compare this to their first two albums is silly--bands and entire genres were formed off the back of those records--but does Weather Diaries sit up there with them? Absolutely.

Though Weather Diaries is a solid effort from a band trying to balance their mastery of shoegaze with other, outside elements, the strongest tracks on Weather Diaries are when the band fully embrace the skeleton of the songwriting formula they’d perfected over two decades ago.

What is clear is that Ride's fifth album is something of a triumph and infinitely better than many a fan could have hoped for. Almost 30 years on those vapour trails show no sign of fading just yet.

Weather Diaries is both recognizably Ride and a logical, tasteful update of its sound.

For those who already believe, it represents a promising comeback that, while never fully hitting the marks set for it by time or the band’s own peers, points to even more inventive, invigorated music on a horizon that likely isn’t another two decades away.

Some of Weather Diaries sounds a bit thin, as the album's vibrant singles come off as outdated recreations of old songs with some unnecessary polish. It isn’t short of ideas, though.

Wooly and long-winded, Weather Diaries gathers eleven rock songs of astonishing vapidity; it has the feel of a term paper printed five minutes before class and forgotten the moment of submission.

I will defend this album as it seems that a lot of places won't. This is a remarkable album for what it is - an hour of shoegaze pop. A lot of detractors of the album wanted something more in line with their first two albums, but if they'd delivered that, it would have been shouts of "not willing to change" or "rehash old ideas" type of criticism. Instead, Ride did their best after such a long time away and created something memorable. It's a really good album. Expand

The first 7 tracks are faultless, especially Weather Diaries. The next 4 bring about a different feel when compared to previous work and might take a little more time to get but are just as good. The best thing about this album is they've tried to stray away from recreating past glories and come up with something I deem one of the best successes of 2017. Keep it up bois. Expand
