Some of Weather Diaries sounds a bit thin, as the album's vibrant singles come off as outdated recreations of old songs with some unnecessary polish. It isn’t short of ideas, though.

Weather Diaries brings electronic touches into play, but the production is too chaste and respectful throughout.

It lacks that sprinkling of stardust to make it special, but after the valedictory bitter taste of Tarantula, it’s good to have Ride back and evidently enjoying themselves again.

A credible effort, then, but not so groundbreaking as to prompt deep re-evaluation of their place in the world. [Aug 2017, p.109]

At its best, Weather Diaries rejuvenates their burn-it-down guitars ad pretty vacancy. ... But some of the old problems remain: a thin lyrical wash, an occasional plod. [Jul 2017, p.86]

We want the glory of Nowhere and parts of Going Blank Again. It is apparent that this is what Ride are aiming for but it's going to take more than what Weather Diaries has to offer.

There’s an attempt here to go back to the relative atmosphere of at least Going Blank Again, but the resulting music ends up sounding like the more reverb-heavy, turn-of-the-millennium British art-rock bands.

Wooly and long-winded, Weather Diaries gathers eleven rock songs of astonishing vapidity; it has the feel of a term paper printed five minutes before class and forgotten the moment of submission.

I will defend this album as it seems that a lot of places won't. This is a remarkable album for what it is - an hour of shoegaze pop. A lot ofI will defend this album as it seems that a lot of places won't. This is a remarkable album for what it is - an hour of shoegaze pop. A lot of detractors of the album wanted something more in line with their first two albums, but if they'd delivered that, it would have been shouts of "not willing to change" or "rehash old ideas" type of criticism. Instead, Ride did their best after such a long time away and created something memorable. It's a really good album. Full Review »
