What a shame to get this awful EDM-soul thing on the charts. Early Worst Pop Album of the Year Contender.

Walker distinguishes himself from the herd with the frenetic, chest-beating chorus to the mighty Dominoes; the shyly addictive duet with Zara Larsson, Now You're gone, co-written by Fulham FC Women striker Chelcee Grimes, and the bereft Angels, all of which sparkle in very different, yet equally beguiling ways. Tom Walker’s debut is a perfect representation of him--cheerful, genuine, heartfelt and talented, and as the final notes of his much-awaited record grace your ears, it definitely seems like it’s a great time to be alive.

As it is, the sense that absolutely nothing here has been left to chance--and that What a Time to Be Alive might have been a more interesting album if it had--is a tough one to avoid.
