It’s enjoyable and familiar, but retains Billie’s disruptive streak. It’s a brave and resounding first step for an artist with bags of potential and over the next decade, you’ll no doubt see popular music scrabbling to try and replicate what this album does on every level.

When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? is a brave and fortuitous debut album from the LA teen, capturing the hopes, fears and vulnerabilities of an entire generation. The genius in this record is its unaffected relatability.

The 17-year-old sensation takes pop iconography and musical status quo and lacerates it, opting out of femme fatale for tomboy cargos and goth macabre, and sleek soundscapes for creepy eccentrics.

With When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, she demonstrates that she can do it all, hinting at a bright future that could truly go in any direction, as messy and hopeful as youth can get.

In some ways the album arrives as a continuation, not an introduction.

The highs are thrilling, and despite their obvious pedigree, arranged unlike anything else in contemporary pop. They also reveal the lows more starkly: the saccharine, coyly suggestive 8, played on a ukulele, and I Love You, which sounds suspiciously like Hallelujah, are better off left to YouTube ingenues than an artist of Eilish’s otherwise clear vision.
  7. 40
For the most part, When We All Fall Asleep is stiflingly dull and bloated, with subpar production from Eilish and her brother, Finneas O’Connell (known for his time on Glee).

This album's hauntingly playful compositional depth and engaging lyricism set it apart from its contemporaries and many of its predecessors.

The lyrical depth of every track begs for our engagement. It has the magnetism that keeps you in your car before going into the grocery store, listening to track over track, teasing out all the levels of meaning in each stanza. All the while, you are trying to wrap your head around the idea that a 17 year and her older brother wrote, performed and recorded this album in her bedroom! The music elucidates truths people in their 40s have yet to discover.

The lyrics grab us, but the acoustical complexity and wholly original arrangements keep us in that car. The arrangements feature melodic beats, samples from The Office and crosswalk beepers and Billie's laughter, all perfectly orchestrated together with Billie's beautiful vocals and expressive intonation.

There isn't a single bad track on the album. Putting this album on repeat is a truly great way to spend an afternoon.

Her debut album is a perfect formula between insanity, creativity and complexity, showing an alternative facet between electronic music and dreampop. Also, a special thanks to her brother and producer FINNEAS, he is a gatekeeper of Billie's art! Expand

This sound is something I have never heard from any artist and it was a refreshing breath of air from the music that has been releasing recently, but that isn't to say that there aren't missteps. Some production choices are a mistake, but as a whole I believe the album is strong especially for a debut.

Billie is a singer that we are not used to hear. She has made an album different to what pop music is nowadays. When the party is over is really good.

Production often sounds outdated. For example You Should See Me in a Crown has a dubstep wobble straight out of 2011. The lyrics are something you'd expect from a 17-year old more or less but it's nothing soundcloud rappers haven't already been rapping about for years. Most interesting song is Bury a Friend. All in all this sounds like a 13 Reasons Why soundtrack. Nothing groundbreaking at all but very marketable. Expand
