It sounds instead much more like an artist stepping back into his old pocket with great relief and delivering the verses he feared he’d never be allowed to. He’s packing even more words in and rapping harder than ever, like his life depended on it.

Mechanically, the hooks that adorned Shadow of a Doubt are largely absent, though Gibbs' increased attention to melody that was displayed on the aforementioned 2015 LP remains.

The fact that Freddie Gibbs created You Only Live 2wice as a concise, to-the-point body of work without fillers and ultimately for a greater purpose than just simply rapping makes it one of, if not the, strongest installment in his catalog thus far.

Each of the eight songs on You Only Live 2wice can be taken as different scenes from a movie, with the one-trick pony effect dulling brighter moments such as “Homesick.”

Throughout the album, he’s haunted by both the things that have and haven’t happened to him, what he has and hasn’t done, ruminating over a tight 32 minutes across eight tracks that feel haunted even at their hardest.

You Only Lie 2wice is a reflection of past mistakes, a declaration of dreams for his family’s future and a time stamp for the strenuous reality of an artist who nearly lost it all on his way to gaining it all.

The inconsistency here might grate but if you focus on Freddie’s spellbinding raps the story is cohesive and fearless. [Jun 2017, p.77]

The alleged crime is only mentioned obliquely, but through its elision it becomes a kind of omni-crime that encompasses all the wrongs Gibbs has ever committed: in the streets, in relationships and in fatherhood.

A trippy reined-in take on Madlib's psychedelia across a powerfully conversational ode to person resurrection winningly contrasted against past druggy misdemeanours. [Jul 2017, p.93]

This is a great album, with continuity, thought, and passion. YOL2 is basically a snapshot of Gibbs life right now. He explains his current problems with his usual lyrical ingenuity and great flow (which is unmatched in the game right now). As for the cons there are a couple weak tracks including Phone Lit and the album I feel should have been a bit longer with this epic story being told (only 8 tracks). Also I feel like there should have been a bit more energy and passion on some tracks. Overall I rated this on how much I enjoyed it compared to other releases lately and that is a 10/10 for me.
