More than a dozen years after the world first heard official tell of a sequel to James Cameron's Avatar, there is finally a teaser trailer for it, and you can watch it below.
Avatar: The Way of Water will hit theaters on Dec. 16. It follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) after the events of the original film, having formed their own family and are proving they will do whatever they can to stay together. Of course, though, an old threat returns, which pushes them out of their home and into Pandora's various regions. There will be tragedies, 20th Century Studios warns.
The teaser shows what the various worlds look like now, including those on land and under the sea.
"Wherever we go, this family is our fortress," the teaser previews.
Other cast members include Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Kate Winslet.
Avatar won three Academy Awards in 2010 and was nominated for six more, including Best Picture, It earned an 83 Metascore from critics, which is considered universal acclaim, and 12 years after its release, it holds the record as the highest-grossing film of all time. It will be re-released in theaters ahead of its sequel debut, on Sept. 23.
Avatar: The Way of Water is the first of four sequels Cameron has in the works. Hailing from 20th Century Studios, it is produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, while Peter M. Tobyansen and David Valdes executive produce.
