There are a lot of film genres that have fans on the edge of their seats awaiting any and all news and reactions to the latest installments. We see it all the time with superhero fare, Star Wars, and other fantasy fare, including Disney properties. And the latter is what has the internet abuzz right now because Disenchanted, the sequel to 2007's Enchanted (Metascore: 75), is just days away from premiering on Disney+.
The film hosted a star-studded premiere event in Hollywood, Calif. on Nov. 16 and following that screening, critics and influencers who had early access to the film were allowed to break their silence on how they felt it stacked up to the original series or other Disney princess films in general. Interestingly, most critics didn't actually make deep comparisons in their social media posts (perhaps they are saving those for longer-form reviews to be written at their various outlets), but most walked out of the film feeling its magic.
You'll notice we said "most." Reactions have been mixed thus far, with the majority leaning toward the positive. Those who liked the film specifically commented performances from actors including Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey. But it should be noted that those who didn't like the film also at times commented on those same actors as being bright spots in it. However, there were complaints about the film's length and the simplicity of story.
To get a better idea of what that means, see below for the positive, the negative, and everything in between (so far). You can also click here to hear directly from the team behind the film about all of the Disney Easter eggs within it. And don't forget to check back on the show's title page right here on Metacritic for the Metascore once full reviews are published.
What a treat! Disenchanted has me under its spell, I absolutely loved it! The music, the magic & the sweet story, it was truly enchanting! #Disenchanted pic.twitter.com/8T8QbZdNsk

Disenchanted is a great follow-up to Enchanted. Amy Adam is a powerhouse! She can be sweet AND wicked in the same breath and its incredible to see. I adored the cast 💖 #Disenchanted pic.twitter.com/Srj4oFXHtN

Disenchanted is MAGICAL! The long, long, long wait to get back to Andalasia was worth it. With incredible songs & powerful performances, it's an instant hit! Have tissues handy though because it packs an emotional punch! We don't all need a fairy tale life. #Disenchanted pic.twitter.com/ZJFzJBiytf

“Disenchanted” takes a hold of every Disney fan’s heart and brings them on a journey infused with comedy, family, and a tight-knit community. #amyadams was absolutely magical #Disenchanted ✨ #DisenchantedMovie #DisneyDisenchanted pic.twitter.com/01cjJSp9qf

Amy Adams and Maya Rudolph cast a spell over viewers in #Disenchanted, which features 7 new songs from @AIMenken, 2 of which are sung by @idinamenzel!!! Coming 11/18 to #DisneyPlus pic.twitter.com/CxeluGmkLv

As someone who loved Enchanted growing up, #Disenchanted is so much fun. It’s filled with heart, magical Easter eggs, and everything you loved about the first movie. It’s amazing to see Amy Adams, @PatrickDempsey, @idinamenzel, and James Marsden reprise these beloved roles. pic.twitter.com/xeahXZra1q

#Disenchanted is a blast! It builds on #Enchanted in a very logical & fantastical fashion & aptly deconstructs relevant ideas of fantasy & reality again. The songs & the way they're visualized is FANTASTIC. Everyone in the cast is great but Amy Adams functions on another LEVEL! pic.twitter.com/8olO5XqrMC

DISENCHANTED is a fun return 2 storybook life meets reality. Amy Adams is both delightfully wicked & princess perfect as Giselle. There is a new kind of stepmother in town.

Packed w/ musical numbers, easter eggs, & loads of Disney magic, you don't want 2 miss it. #Disenchanted pic.twitter.com/LUbonBV12K
#Disenchanted is great. The sequel is more mature but it doesn't stop expanding its fairy tale, full of excellent songs. The film feels extensive, but every minute of Amy Adams is appreciated. With a few twists, the actress still has the charm of Giselle. pic.twitter.com/IJEaJSOVrh

Count me shocked that #Disenchanted is actually good… I adore the first enchanted but nothing was making me too excited for the sequel… but damn was it fun. The actors step back into the roles & the script is flipped into a fun way! Magic is there pic.twitter.com/nYI6vAoKKC

Unfortunately, #Disenchanted loses ALL of the magic of the original. A lazy, unfunny sequel devoid of charm. Not even the talented Amy Adams or Charismatic McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey) are able to save this from the curse of becoming a forgettable, straight to streaming event. pic.twitter.com/wTwXH5NtAB

It gives me no pleasure to say this, but DISENCHANTED is *terrible.* Not funny, lacking in charm, forgettable songs, and a dumb story. I loved the original, so this is a massive, massive disappointment. #Disenchanted

Woof. #Disenchanted might possibly be one of the worst movies of the year. The charm of the first film is replaced by a story that makes no sense, CG that looks worse than it did in 2007, hammy acting, forgettable songs, and heaping helpings of corny humor. What happened here?? pic.twitter.com/L2O6izarGR

Enchanted will forever be one of my favorite Disney movies, which is why I was so excited for #Disenchanted, Unfortunately this sequel ignores what made the first one so special and fun, the fairy tale interaction with the modern world. Very disappointing. pic.twitter.com/qxpow2YMoj

Bad news: #Disenchanted is a disappointment. It barely allows for Amy Adams to do the things she’s gotta do. It’s a mess. I’ll have more words on this once the review embargo breaks. pic.twitter.com/ltcoBYmwxp

#Disenchanted is an enchanting sequel despite struggling to rival its predecessor. Liked it but didn't love it
— Josh Martin-Jones (@JoshM_Jones) November 17, 2022
The evil fairytale stereotypes are great but feel the plot is just a tad mediocre. Amy Adams and Maya Rudolph have wicked chemistry and Idina Menzel's solo is ICONIC! pic.twitter.com/2OmHtxi538
Honestly, I liked #Disenchanted! It could've been 30 minutes shorter and it's obvious they did tons of reshoots. But thanks to the cast's dedication to the creative story and Menken's new music, it works. Nowhere near as good as the original but it still has all the Disney magic! pic.twitter.com/TKIN5IHSK9

#Disenchanted cleverly flips the script on the first film, which makes for some good fun. The cast is having a blast, even if there’s a bit of magic missing (memorable songs too).

There are definitely some bright spots, but I was missing the freshness of the first Enchanted. pic.twitter.com/o1FUwc6KVz
