'Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves'
Paramount PicturesThe infamous role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons is getting another screen adaptation with Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and now you can join in on the campaign with the first footage from the film.
The movie is based on the Hasbro game that sees players creating characters that usually come with enhanced skills, including fighting abilities, and often mystical powers. These heroes take on challengers that often include such supernatural creatures (known as monsters) as mind flayers, dragons, and giants that range from being of the storm to fire to frost kind.
The film follows a titular team of thieves who have made some enemies along the way, due to their line of work. Now those enemies are looking for revenge. But maybe they have a point.
"Truth be told, we helped the wrong person steal the wrong thing," Chris Pine's character says in the trailer, which you can watch below. "We didn't mean to unleash the greatest evil the world's ever known, but we're going to fix it."
In order to succeed there, they need strength, courage, magic, and some special allies.
The movie also stars Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Hugh Grant, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, Jason Wong, and Daisy Head.
Previously, Dungeons and Dragons received a 1990s television series of the same title that saw its characters go to a theme park where they got sucked into the game world and a feature film version in 2000 (Metascore: 14) that was more straight-forward in its storytelling being inside a fantastical world from a campaign. However, the game has become even more of a pop culture touchpoint in recent years, receiving a standalone episode on Dan Harmon's Community in 2011 and featuring heavily in Netflix's Stranger Things across its four seasons so far.
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves comes from Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who both direct and wrote the screenplay. Michael Gilio also worked on the screenplay, and the film is from his story with Chris McKay. Entertainment One and Sweetpea Entertainment produce. Paramount Pictures will release the film in theaters on March 3, 2023.
