Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge

Tribute Games

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge is a nostalgic beat 'em up that takes the iconic TMNT crew and throws them into a game filled with modern conveniences. That mixture of old-school style with new-school amenities has allowed it to pull in rave reviews, and it's currently sitting with an impressive 85 Metascore.

TMNT fans, in particular, will find a lot to love about the turtles latest outing. The series is no stranger to the beat 'em up genre, but Shredder's Revenge seems to have perfected the formula. Each character comes with their own unique attributes, and a deep combat system means there's a high skill ceiling for those who want to hone their abilities. And with Easter eggs and familiar faces scattered throughout every level, long-time fans have good reason to sink their teeth into its robust combat system and experience everything the game has to offer.

Shredder's Revenge isn't just fun to play, it's also fun to look at. Tribute Games has covered the arcade game head to toe in gorgeous pixel art. Characters look stunning, attacks result in explosions of color, and animations make every movement come alive in style. You'll also be treated to a variety of different color palettes as you work your way through a variety of biomes in an attempt to put a stop to Shredder's latest scheme.

Unfortunately, the beat 'em up comes to an end faster than you'd expect, with most players wrapping up the adventure in just a few hours. But if you're looking for another fun game to replace it in your gaming lineup, there are plenty of other brawlers to consider.

Here are 10 games like TMNT: Shredder's Revenge to play next, listed by Metascore.

Batman: Arkham Knight

Batman: Arkham Knight (PS4)

Metascore: 87
Best for: Fans of acrobatic combat
Where to buy:

Also available on: PC, XB1

It's not a side-scrolling beat 'em up like Shredder's Revenge, but its combat is every bit as impressive. Playing as the Caped Crusader, you'll have access to a mountain of gadgets to help incapacitate the criminals roaming Gotham's gritty streets. Batman is incredibly acrobatic too, flipping over enemies, deftly dodging incoming attacks, and landing 100-punch combinations without breaking a sweat. When you're not busting skulls, you'll be able to roam around Gotham — both on foot and with the iconic Batmobile.

"Graphically astounding, narratively compelling, and featuring two utility belts full of new gadgets. This is bat-time very, very well spent." — PlayStation Official Magazine Australia

Hollow Knight (PC)

Metascore: 87
Best for: Fans of Metroidvanias
Where to buy:

Also available on: PS4, Switch, XB1

Hollow Knight is a haunting Metroidvania that's every bit as challenging as it is beautiful. You'll dive into a 2D world populated by insect-inspired enemies, unlocking new abilities as you trek deeper into its unforgiving world. It's not quite a beat 'em up, but its tactical (and fast-paced) combat is just as enjoyable. The experience is only enhanced by an atmospheric world brought to life by cartoonish graphics that are both adorable and nightmarish. If you're a completist, you'll need to sink around 60 hours into its world before uncovering everything it has to discover, but with an 87 Metascore, it's likely to be time well spent.

Cuphead

Studio MDHR

Cuphead (XB1)

Metascore: 86
Best for: Fans of ultra-challenging platformers
Where to buy:

Also available on: PC, PS4, Switch

Cuphead is not an easy game. In fact, it might be the most challenging game on this list. But its 1930s cartoon-inspired graphics make it an enjoyable grind. Each of its 2D-platforming levels puts you up against a deadly boss. Some are gigantic bees, others are pirate captains, and eventually you'll face off against the devil himself. But regardless of what you're up against, the key to victory is fast reflexes and slowing memorizing attack patterns. It's a bit more methodical than Shredder's Revenge, but its brutal combat should be a great fit for fans of the turtles' latest adventure.

"The great visual style and the hectic gameplay makes Cuphead a game everyone should at least try." — Gamer.no

Your journey through Tokyo will put you up against gangs of deadly enemies, but its arcade action lets you pull off a litany of over-the-top moves as you try to make it out alive. It's not a true open-world game, but when you're not in the thick of battle you can wander the neon-lit streets and enjoy a wide variety of side quests. Karaoke is a particular favorite, although you can also play arcade games, go bowling, enjoy a bit of Mahjong, and more.

"Drama and humor come together in a setting filled with violent street fights. We all know the concept, but Yakuza 0 takes it to perfection." — InsideGamer.nl

Fight'N Rage (Switch)

Metascore: 79
Best for: Fans of deep combat systems

Fight'N Rage is a futuristic brawler with the stylings of an old-school action game. It takes place in a world ruled by mutants, with humans fighting for their freedom. Its graphics are decidedly retro, although some flashy special effects make it stand out in a marketplace overrun with pixelated games. Like all beat 'em ups, the combat system is Fight'N Rage's main attraction. It revolves on a combo system that lets you pull of devastating attacks with just a few button presses. While it's easy to learn the basics, you'll need to put in some time before you can master its nuances. You'll also find plenty of unlockables, a co-op mode, and multiple endings depending on how you play.

River City Girls

Sony

River City Girls (PS4)

Metascore: 79
Best for: Fans of colorful pixel art graphics
Where to buy:

Also available on: PC, PS5, Switch, XB1

River City Girls is a spin-off of the popular Kunio-kun series, taking players once again to the tumultuous streets of River City but this time following Kyoko and Misako. Kunio and Riki (the usual stars) have been kidnapped, and it's up to the new heroes to save the day. This fun spin on the standard River City story is half the reason you'll keep playing. The other half is its side-scrolling action, which gives you six gigantic regions to fight through, tons of collectible items and power-ups, and adorable pixel art graphics that are punctuated with high-quality cutscenes. Running through River City solo is a blast, but its even better when played cooperatively with a friend.

Metascore: 79
Best for: Those looking for a chiptune soundtrack and fast-paced action
Where to buy:

Also available on: PC, PS4, Stadia, XB1

First launched over a decade ago (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game), Scott Pilgrim fans were then treated to a remastered version in 2021 that offered all the original DLC and brought it to audiences on new platforms. Everything else, however, is largely the same as it was in 2010. You'll step into the shoes of Scott Pilgrim (and other characters in his crew) as you battle against Ramona's seven evil exes. Its brawler chops are second to none, but it's the catchy, chiptune soundtrack that stands out the most.

"This game will punch the highlights out of your hair. It's a hard and fast retro throwback that was revived for a very good reason." — Ninty Fresh Magazine
