Keiynan Lonsdale and Dylan Sprouse in 'My Fake Boyfriend'
Courtesy of YouTubeSome movies and television shows like to tout that the best way to get over someone is to get under someone else. My Fake Boyfriend, however, is offering an alternative: creating a fake boyfriend on social media to make the other guy jealous.
In a new trailer for the film that will be released June 17 on Amazon Prime Video, Andrew (Keiynan Lonsdale) is a dating disaster. Most notably, he just can't stay away from a toxic guy (played by Marcus Rosner) who recently dumped him. So his friends (played by Dylan Sprouse and Sarah Hyland) go all in on making him social media official with a stranger whose face they are borrowing. (And we mean all in, including putting up a green screen and wearing green body suits to pose with Andrew for the photos onto which "Cristiano's" face will be digitally added.)
While that may work to make Andrew's ex jealous, things go awry when Cristiano ends up going viral — and Andrew meets a chef named Rafi (Samer Salem), who he thinks might be his dream guy.
"The longer this goes on, the worse it gets," Andrew says.
But it's not as simple as deleting Cristiano, as Sprouse's character has gotten very attached to slipping into his shoes to speak to the world.
If Cristiano seems too good to be true, he is, but whether the trio will be found out for creating him remains to be seen. Then again, every romantic comedy needs a third-act obstacle for the new couple to surpass, right?
This romantic comedy is written by Luke Albright & Joe Wanjai Ross and Greg Boaldin, and directed by Rose Troche.
