KaMillion and Aida Osman in 'Rap Sh!t'

HBO Max

HBO Max just released a full trailer for its forthcoming comedy Rap Sh!t; watch it below.

The show follows two estranged high school friends (Shawna, played by Aida Osman, and Mia, played by KaMillion), who reconnect and decide to form a rap group. Living in Miami, though, their daily lives — including day jobs, romantic relationships, a complicated past with a flashy producer, and a kid — challenge their new dreams, though.

Also challenging the new group? The expected aesthetic and messaging of most mainstream female rappers.

"My art is not for the male gaze," Shawna says in the trailer. "I want to make something relevant to people's lives."

But with a little help from a promoter-manager (played by Jonica Booth), they will make at least some strides in Season 1.

Devon Terrell, and RJ Cyler also star in the half-hour comedy, which is executive produced by Issa Rae; Syreeta Singleton, who also serves as showrunner; Montrel McKay; Jonathan Berry and Dave Becky for 3 Arts Entertainment; and Deniese Davis. Rae also wrote the premiere and co-wrote the finale with Singleton. Yung Miami and JT of City Girls serve as co-executive producers, as do Kevin "Coach K" Lee and Pierre "P" Thomas for Quality Control Films and Sara Rastogi for HOORAE. Raedio does the music supervision for the series.

Rae introduces the trailer by telling audiences it will be the next "big, must-see, fun show of the summer."

Rap Sh!t premieres July 21 with the first two episodes beginning at 6 p.m. PT / 9 p.m. ET. Then, each of the rest of the six episodes of the eight-episode season will stream Thursdays at the same time up to and including its finale on Sept. 1.
