Chosen Jacobs in 'Sneakerella'
Disney+"Once upon a pair of sneakers, there lived a boy who was full of creativity," and you can meet him in the just-released trailer for Sneakerella, which streams May 13 on Disney+.
That boy, El (Chosen Jacobs), is a teenager who works in a family-owned shoe store in Queens, N.Y. and dreams of being a sneaker designer but hides his talent from his stepfather and stepbrothers. However, after a chance encounter with Kira King (Lexi Underwood), who is the daughter of sneaker royalty, encouragement from his best friend (played by Devyn Nekoda), and of course a touch of Disney magic, he begins to dream big and create big, as well.
"If you put enough of yourself into a design, it's gonna hit," El says in the trailer, which you can watch below. "Once I slip on that sneaker, it's my story."
Sneakerella is a twist on the classic Cinderella story, and that means it features similar themes and characters, but also that it includes original musical numbers. It modernizes the fan-favorite tale by putting the woman (Kira) in the Prince(ss) Charming role, as well as rooting the story in the sneaker culture that has become such a hot commodity for big brands and celebrities. The 1950s animated feature film has an 85 Metascore from critics. Sneakerella's review embargo has not yet lifted.
Sneakerella also stars John Salley, Juan Chioran, Bryan Terrell Clark, Kolton Stewart, Robyn Alomar, Yvonne Senat Jones and Hayward Leach. From Disney Branded Television, it is directed and co-executive produced by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum; executive produced by Jane Startz and Rachel Watanabe-Batton; and written by David Light & Joseph Raso, Tamara Chestna, and Mindy Stern & George Gore II, based on a story from Stern & Gore and Light & Raso. Chestna also serves as co-executive producer.
