He struggled early in his career as the head man, where his career record as coach of the Cleveland Browns was 36-44 (1991-95). In 1996, he went back to be with his mentor, Bill Parcells, to become the Defensive Coordinator for the Patriots, the same capacity he was in when Parcells coached the New York Giants to Super Bowl wins over the Broncos and Bills (read: Scott Norwood). When Parcells left to coach the New York Jets, he took Belichick with him. The pair spent the years 1997-99 in Hempstead, Long Island (the Jets' headquarters). For a team that had gone 1-15 in 1996, Parcells was God, and Belichick was the Holy Spirit. The Jets finally won their AFC East title in 1998 and got to within one game of the Super Bowl. Following a disappointing 1999 season, Bill Parcells stepped down as Jets' coach. Belichick opted to become top dog with New England. Since becoming the Patriots Head Coach, Belichick is 53-27,with 3 Super Bowl wins and three AFC Championships. Along the way, Bill won 21 straight games, traded away Drew Bledsoe and Terry Glenn, gave a draft choice to the Bengals for prized running back Corey Dillon, and found himself a franchise QB in Tom Brady.
