Biography: A balding, plump actor who worked primarily on the stage, he began appearing on Broadway in 1933. Later in the decade he appeared in several productions of Orson Welles's Mercury Theater company. He acted in, directed, and/or produced numerous Broadway plays, and directed the film The Lost Moment (1947) with Robert Cummings and Susan Hayward. He began appearing in films in the early '50s, going on to a sporadic screen career in which he played character roles ranging from comic to sinister. He was married to actress Arlene Francis, with whom he frequently appeared as a panelist on the TV game-show What's My Line?
