Phoebe Cates was born July 16, 1963, in New York City, New York. As an adolescent, she attended the Professional Children's School in New York City. Cates enjoyed a modeling career as a teenager, and landed her first big job with Seventeen magazine at the age of 15, despite the fact that she was still wearing braces on her teeth at the time. She began her acting career in 1982, when she co-starred with Jennifer Jason Leigh in a blockbuster film, Fast Times at Ridgemont High. From there, she also starred in the 1983 film Private School, and the 1984 film Gremlins along with many others. However, Coates did not limit her acting career to only film, she also dabbled in stage acting. Her stage theater debut was in 1984, when she starred in the play The Nest of the Wood Grouse, an Off-Broadway production. In 1989, Cates married fellow Hollywood actor Kevin Kline. The couple have two children together.
