Strother Martin
Biography: Martin was an American character actor who specialized in playing quirky, gruff, and often menacing westerners. He was originally a swimming instructor when he moved to Hollywood from his native Indiana. His films include: The Asphalt Jungle (1952), The Shaggy Dog (1959) with Fred MacMurray, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) with Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne, both True Grit (1969) and its sequel Rooster Cogburn (1975) also with John Wayne, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) with Paul Newman and Robert Redford and The Champ (1979). He was a regular on the TV series Hotel De Paree (1959-60) and Hawkins (1973-74), costarring Jimmy Stewart. Martin spoke the immortal line from Cool Hand Luke (1967): "What we have here is a failure to communicate."
