Joyful. Animaniacs may not match other animated shows’ high-brow humor or enthralling stories, but it’s able to contain so much unadulterated fun that the other things I may be looking for don’t seem to matter. Hulu’s new season isn’t a reimagining of the original; it’s a continuation. And in the 22 years since they left the airwaves, the Warner Siblings haven’t missed a beat.
If there’s anything we need right now is something reliable to make us laugh. And Animaniacs fills that bill, just about as well as it did in the go-go ’90s.
This reboot of the Animaniacs is still a ton of fun. While it stumbles at times and doesn’t quite capture the magic of the original, there is enough wit to remind fans of the heyday of Saturday morning cartoons.
The reboot strives for the same mix of satire and silliness, but the balance is off in the five episodes (of 13) screened for critics. Just as in the original, nothing is off limits for sending up, but this reboot is fairly itching for a fight. Pinky and the Brain, the only other Animaniacs characters to return (sorry, no Chicken Boo), end up mired in a toothless social media riff and some election satire. ... When Animaniacs remembers to have fun, it makes for lively, occasionally impressive, viewing.
Unfortunately, the first episode is as good as this reboot of Animaniacs gets. What follows in the five episodes from the season cherrypicked and sent to critics is an innocuous disappointment. ... The new Animaniacs is just the sort of minor disappointment that makes you go, "I know I used to enjoy this show … Heh, that was kinda funny … Now why aren't I laughing more?"
Occasionally, it hits on a smart way to update the old sensibility in a way that makes perfect sense, particularly when it switches up the animation style to explore a different world. But more often than not, its focus on how messed up the world is now gives 2020’s “Animaniacs” more of a sour aftertaste that keeps it from being as effervescent as it once was, and could be.
Animaniacs has come back with a very interesting new proposal. It is not the same, and that is what we must expect. We can see the same crazy and insane Warner brothers (and the Warner sister) but in today's environment.
I really enjoyed the show and hope that with more episodes the writers can feel more comfortable with the characters in order to create new adventures for these characters than must be considered like classics.
This series is... Not really that fun to watch. As a fan of the original Animaniacs who was born around the time it was ending, even I was able to enjoy the jokes and gags in the original. Coming in to a reboot, you would expect at least some similar quality comedy, but no. Animaniacs (2020) is basically two heavy-handed, politically charged, unfunny Warner Bros. segments surrounding one Pinky & The Brain segment, which is usually pretty good and the only reason my score is giving points at all. The jokes in 2/3 of the show land on their ankles. The soundtrack is so forgettable that I can't even conjure any of the themes in my head while writing this. The theme song has been tweaked in small ways, be it lyrics or animations, that detract from any feeling that this show isn't a shill (trolls WOULD say that you're passé, Animaniacs, except that the originals are still very much timeless.) The animation is very sterilized compared to the original seasons, and it altogether just feels... Muted. Almost all the jokes are just appeals to what the writers think millennials may like, at the cost of SO many of the ideas and bits of zany humor that made the originals classics.
I was so excited to see them come back. Now I wish it never happened.
Loved this show growing up and my kids also love the old show from the 90's. This reboot is terrible and ruins the show!! Keep the politically correct jargon out of the show and stick with what actually works. The humor was forced and geared towards a liberal audience. With politics being so charged in today's world, it's a good idea to avoid it. Plus, there are a lot of Trump supporters who wouldn't appreciate him being portrayed as he is in the show. If you're going to include politics at least be equal with how their portrayed. Don't portray one side as a hero and the other as a total idiot. What a major let down this show was for me! I won't be watching anymore past the first 2 episodes.
