Season 2 is named „The Coming of the Shadows“. At the conclusion of season 1 you have seen the shadows on the horizon which is by the way the German title for season 2. Big events are started and there are a lot of agendas hidden behind the surface. All powers will try to set up their figurines of the game board. This is the first of the 10/10 seasons and the reason this became my favorite show. It has a strong story, good characters and humor. There are many plots, developments and revelations. Lets give a set up: The president of the Earth Alliance has died in a strange accident that raised more than a few eyebrows and is replaced by the former vice president Clark. The Centauri are on the brink of war with the Narn and have delivered a critical first blow to the Narn military by also strange means. There are also rumors about strange occurrences at the edges of explored space. Meanwhile Commander Sinclair is replaced as head of Babylon 5 and now the new human ambassador on the Minbari home-world. His successor is Captain John Sheridan a Human / Minbari war hero. He was the only human that manged to destroy a Minbari capital ship and also survive to tell the story. Even more it was the flagship the legendary Black Star and he is famous for this as Starkiller. This will be viewed as a change in Earth politics and an affront or intimidation. Like I said the game is changing and there will be developments and set ups. I always praise that they did a multi season storyline for the show. The set ups pay off and there is so much character development and progress. Nearly no race or character will be left unchanged. Again I must praise Joseph Michael Straczynski for this. He can be called the Tolkien of science fiction and with more works he would have created something that has the same worldbuilding and legacy. Again I will praise the whole cast. Bruce Boxleitner, Mira Furlan, Richard Biggs, of cause Andreas Katsulas and Peter Jurasic, Bill Mumy, Claudia Christiansen and all the other. I do not have the space here to say why. Lets continue with my favorite episodes: The first two episodes “Points of Departure” and “Revelations” sets up the new status quo, gives answers and new questions (as it should be with good story telling in this stage). You will see that there is far more than meets the eye. “The Geometry of Shadows” should be silly but works so well for me that I had to include it. It has great humor, an interesting set up and also adds the Techno-Mages to the lore. Arthur C. Clarke said that “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” and this is true for them. They studied technology and have developed their arts to impressive results. “Soul Mates” is a Londo story. It is humorous, the story is enjoyable and the resolve pays off well. “The Coming of Shadows” deals with the aging Centauri emperor visiting Babylon 5. Such a great episode and a lot of developments. Also a lot to talk in what if discussions as major changes to the history could have happened. “Gropos” for both Franklins, showing the truth of war and the politics about it. The conclusion is something others shows would shy away. “There All the Honor Lies” for the Minbari and Sheridan. Both will grow and develop more of a mutual understanding. “In the Shadow of Z’ha’dum” gives you finally answers and explanations within an intense story or better said cat and mouse game. “Knives” is a change in pace and shows again more of London and Centauri culture. Urza is the best one episode character in this season and the impact of the conclusion is amazing. I still feel the emotions of this after all the years “Confessions and Lamentations” is one of the saddest episodes and a warning of the dangers of religious dogmas. I have to put on “Divided Loyalties” here for one of the hardest hitting twists of the show and a great whodunit. The final episodes “The Fall of Night” is again a game changer and a revelation to the galaxy. A lot will be revealed. Overall a truly magnificent season and worth a 10/10 and easy recommendation. This is how to do a science fiction show and space opera.
Season 2 is the beginning of the Shadow War. This is the season when the main story arc kicks in to gear and sets up more situations for the all out chaos of season 3.

Season 2 of Babylon 5 is when the main story really got going. All the build up from season 1 pays off with the expertly defined characters given the opportunity to show their complexities as the world around them changes. Babylon 5 certainly became one of the best science fiction shows ever starting with Season 2. It is ambitious, non-compromising, and really ahead of its time. Again, the inferior production values and special effects can hurt things and make it cheesier than it should be, but the storytelling it top notch. Overall score: 8.5/10
