Each of the actors in Betty plays a character loosely based on themselves, but that doesn’t take away from the nuance and sensitivity they bring to their performances. ... But what remains most extraordinary about Betty is the way it places the viewer so viscerally in New York.
Even when filmmaker and series creator Crystal Moselle ups the ante on the drama in season two, it remains understated. Betty manages to deliver the same slice-of-life charm of season one, even while set against the sobering reality of a global pandemic and the feverish June protests.

The camaraderie and joy at the heart of “Betty,” and the series’ unwavering endorsement of the idea that platonic love is the most important kind, make season two just as watchable as its predecessor.
Electric, energetic and certainly freewheeling. ...
The series, like Skate Kitchen, features beautifully propulsive sequences of skateboarding across New York, but shines brightest in its most stripped-down, documentary-adjacent moments of mundane girl talk.
The elevated aesthetics of skate vids permeate “Betty,” elevated by the saturated hues of a sweaty New York summer and technicolor scenester fashion. The perfectly curated music choices add to overall alluring vibe of the show. It’s unfortunate that “Betty” is mostly style over substance, especially when the style is this valid.
With all of the first season’s social commentary stripped away, “Betty” has now become a banal, painfully self-absorbed slog through petty problems.
Betty is a love letter to Girls and New York in a relevant way that shows like Girls and even Sex in the City never managed. Every half hour leaves you wanting more and yet they manage to tackle important issues like the the #metoo movement and #Blacklivesmatter in a sensitive and accessible way. I challenge anyone to watch it and not want to hang out with Kirt, Camille, Janay, Honeybear etc. One of the shows of the year so far, an absolute joy to watch.

Crystal Moselle directed a film called Skate Kitchen that revolved around a group of female skateboarders. This series (now in Season 2) grew out of the characters and situations from that movie. They hang, make videos, do drugs and skate around New York, sometimes dealing with the males that dominate the sport. It sounds like this might be aimed at a limited audience, but the genuine personalities they create (all non-pros) are fascinating (esp. Nina Moran as Kirt). The things going on in their lives aren’t especially unique, but the way they’re framed and the lively energy makes it fun. NOTE: A Betty used to be a derogatory term for skate girls, but they’ve reclaimed it here.
NOTE 2: Look for a cameo by legend Tony Hawk.

Season 1 was a good surprise, but the new one felt rushed and unnecessary. Skating was not important anymore; instead, they decided to tackle all those social issues. Talking about Black Lives Matter, Me Too, sugar babies, polyamory, and teenage angst in just six episodes, all at once, made the season look overstuffed and clumsy.
