The other half of what makes Brockmire special--raunchy and depraved, but also surprisingly tender and even romantic (imagine Catastrophe if most of it took place at a minor league ballpark)--is how Azaria and the show’s creator, Joel Church-Cooper, are able to find the vulnerable human being underneath the accent and his familiar plaid blazer, even as Brockmire never breaks character or stops talking like he’s doing play-by-play on his own life.
The pilot episode of "Brockmire" made me laugh out loud more than any episode of television comedy has in over decade. The first two episodes are fairly well structured stories but still manage to be surprising and they are just really damned funny. Hank Azaria somehow maintains his comedic baseball announcer tone throughout without it becoming annoying or troublesome even in the more earnest moments. Amanda Peet does a solid job as always and remains one of the most loveable screen presences around. Tis may be the best comedy on TV in a decade.
I don't know how anyone could not like this show. From the hilarious, heartfelt performances to the brilliant script that's a mix of laugh out loud funny and raw emotion, I seriously have not connected with a show the way I connected with Brockmire in a long time. Whether or not you like baseball, the bottom line is you'll love this show.
Azaria and Peet are great, together and separately. Both bring a humor and sympathy to characters that might otherwise prove difficult to tolerate, let alone like.
Over the course of the eight episodes, Brockmire moves through a trio of arcs, delivering underdog sports hijinks, the Jules-Brockmire romance and Brockmire's sad and probably doomed search for redemption. That's all propped up with enough low-brow jokes, raunchy baseball references and disreputable hijinks that the show never wallows.
Brockmire doesn’t throw a perfect game on its first trip to the mound, but it gets most of its pitches across the plate--and even delivers some surprising dramatic brushbacks.
Later episodes suggest Brockmire will try to become a better person. That’s a bad call. The fun is watching him spin out of control like a drunk pitcher’s fastball.
Yes, this story’s kind of been told before, in various places, and in various forms over various decades--but with not nearly as many vulgar words called into service here.
Azaria created and fully embraces "Brockmire". Amanda Peet steps up word for word. Surprised by the funny take of the young actor playing his Internet producer. Nice balance and both bring out a soft side to the lead character. Looking forward to seeing where the season leads and glad it has already been renewed. Happy to see on Amazon Prime - perfect for binge viewing. Loved it!
While it's not for everyone, this is a very funny and clever take on what was a one off bit for Azaria a few years ago on Funny or Die. Azaria's Brockmire is extremely funny and extremely crude. Seriously this show is not for those who can't stand numerous sexual references and, being on IFC, they are able to get away with a whole lot more then on regular cable. And they definitely push that boundary as far as they can. Amanda Peet is still one of my favorite actresses in Hollywood and she does a great job here. There's already been a second season ordered for this show and Ive felt like it was one of the best comedies in quite awhile. Again, though, this is not for the faint of heart.
A nice addition to the series, previous fans will enjoy. looking forward to seeing where they take it beyond this. not without it's flaws. A very funny and in tune series.
It's good enough. Hank Azaria and Amanda Peet do their thing, and it works.
The show has some week spots, but Hank Azaria cranks out a couple of funny performances that makes it worth my while and keeps me interested.
I just wonder whether the show can go further down that lane without getting repetitive and boring.
But let's wait...
funny show. azaria is a hoot, am not usually a fan of amanda peet but am looking forward to seeing where this premise goes, will be tuning in next week
