So relentlessly watchable it's likely to be habit-forming after two doses, City of Angels is more than a promising midseason addition. It makes an immediate case for itself as the best drama on CBS. [16 Jan 2000, p.6I]
Sunday's premiere episode of City of Angels is polished, but it lacks the raw intensity of other Bochco shows like "NYPD Blue," "L.A. Law," "Hill Street Blues," even "Murder One." Pacing is languorous - closer to "Chicago Hope" than "ER" - and anyone who remembers "St. Elsewhere" will quickly realize that one of the show's key characters, the hospital itself, seems underused in City of Angels. City of Angels, a good but uneven show, crackles when depicting romance or behind-the-scenes intrigue. But in addressing race, the show can turn preachy, earnest and trite. [16 Jan 2000, p.F1]
Both good and bad. It has some obvious strengths (a strong, easy-to-like cast, a distinctive urban look) and one or two structural weaknesses (conventional plots, flat attempts at humor). If the creators - including Steven Bochco - can edge City of Angels a few more inches into the originality zone in the next few weeks, it has the potential to join TV's growing collection of quality hour-long series.
