That being said, I was not anticipating a complete copy and paste from the anime. This doesn’t work as an adaptation, nor as a standalone thing. The writing is amateurish and relies heavy on marvel style humor, the changes to the characters’ personalities or what drives their plot have all been changed for the worse; the biggest offender being the Vicious/Julia plot line which was painful to watch. Everything about the show just feels so cheap. I feel bad for the actors, especially the main cast. I feel like they gave it their all but in my honest opinion, it’s the writing department that’s to blame for this atrocity. Gave this a 4 instead of a 1-2 for Mustafa’s performance as Jet. Expand

Maybe the cast wasn’t perfect, and we all missed our redhead, and finally… I was just getting used to everything. Some villains were pretty bad (the cast) and looked stupid, but I recall GOT one, where everyone looked ridiculous.
I thought of this show as fun, actually made me laugh, and I do not understand why everyone including Netflix is so racially biased. It’s an anime, get over it. They act great, they are awesome doing so…. And as always with a series, where an Asian plays lead role .. - it’s canceled. That’s actually tragic, and quite frustrating. We have a lead Asian actor and another lead actor who is black, and that seems like too much to handle for Netflix. Thanks to all the actors, it was awesome, I was happy seeing my fav cowboys and my fav strong independent female on screen.

The Cowboy Bebop anime is probably my all time favorite anime ever! It felt like I was watching one of those bad CW shows or a cheap Fox show. I hated what they did to certain characters like Vicious and Julia and Ed. I honestly blame the show runners for its failure not the actors. I was hoping this show would be good but sadly its not. Expand

Live action just can't achieve the same heightened realism or extreme emotion that is possible in anime. Anime can easily show Spike throwing lightning fast kicks and then throw in a two second shot of him landing the key punch. And live-action requires a bunch of effort and budget to achieve a less-good version of that.

The casting is mostly excellent, especially Mustafa Shakir who could easily be mistaken for the anime version of Jett for how well he nails the voice and mannerisms. Faye was kind of ridiculous in the anime, and I think Pineda does a good job of bringing her into live action. I love John Cho, but the dude is almost fifty and is not an action star. He's great when doing anything other than fighting, but Spike has to do a lot of fighting and it really feels like Cho just can't quite keep up. The fight scenes have good choreography, but they often feel like a slo-mo rehearsal. The frenetic jazz soundtrack tries to set a high-tempo, but the action on screen feels languid by comparison.

And as far as style, there are more images seared into my brain from the 20-minute first anime episode than from the 90-minutes of the first two live-action episodes. Any sci-fi show is make-or-break in how well it uses its FX budget, classics like Firefly and The Expanse make excellent use of a few limited establishing shots and space ship fly-bys. Unfortunately, Bebop is clearly hindered by its budget and falls short of those much older shows. Episode 1 ends with a fight in what is supposed to be a space-port, but is clearly just an airport with a CG spaceship composited in.

Anime is great because it takes advantage of all the benefits of animation: heightened realism, fantastical settings, time dilation to convey speed or impact, etc. But porting it over to live action robs anime of all its magic. And Cowboy Bebop feels like its huffing and puffing to capture a sliver of that anime magic, and only captures a sliver.

The problem is that you'd need a filmmaker who takes it seriously and respect the intelligence of the audience. The anime touched upon such intense scenes and existential topics and this completely missed the mark. I did not want a beat for a beat but if the team understood the source material and its philosophical element I think this would have been able to be achieved. They can say : "You are just haters"

More like I don't want respected, medium-defining works like Cowboy Bebop to be mishandled at it was here. They ruined Faye's storyline and character it is a completely different persona. Faye in the source material personality-wise was very realistic and I do not understand for the life of me why they rewrote her that way (in every way). The saving grace is Mustafa Shakir as Jet he was the only one to truly embody his character and Cho has good moments too. Overall they missed the philosophical, moral essence of the original that existential necessary component. It lost its bebop soul.

The nicest thing I can say is that it really made me appreciate the anime a lot more. Spike in the anime is just instantly likable.. the characters are so expressive and the action is a lot of fun too.
In the show... everything is just straight up terrible. The only character who actually feels like their anime counterpart is jet. The writing is pretty awful.. especially the jokes... God they make a lot of jokes but none of them are funny.
It's fine that they changed the storyline. It's probably a good idea if you're making a live adaptation but the story just isn't interesting. The show feels cartoonish and tries to be fun... it isn't.
I really hope they don't make a season 2... there's just nothing to build on here. The show is a mess beyond repair. Also that scene with Ed... yikes... that looked awful. It's in no way the actor's fault though. The director and writers are just incompetent.

Seriously, how did Netflix make Cowboy Bebop so terrible?

I also watched and compared the original anime episodes they imitated. It seems like they made this show with the reason: "There's this thing called Cowboy Bebop, everybody talks a lot, the dubbed version we made in America is still in business, why don't we buy the IP of it and make money on it?".

One of the biggest features of anime was animation visuals and fluidity in animation. They turned this into like a Syfy series and that visuals and fluidity disappeared. Especially when you compare the Church scene, when he is trying to go upstairs, the weaknesses in this subject is very noticeable. In the anime he is trying to go with a vengeance and greed, in the Netflix series it was like "do not tire yourself too much, point the gun, we will die anyway".

Anime's other biggest feature was the storytelling and the relations between the characters.
Spike isn't bad, but the light hearted vibe is gone and he felt too old and serious for the role.
They turned Faye into a very "Netflix-esque" character.
Vicious is a man-child villain, he doesn't have a tenth of his anime charisma and intimidation.
Julia was really butchered, they changed her from a Femme Fatale character to a pop-lipped Tik-Tok influencer.
Only Jet Black was successful, and his voice was very similar to the Japanese voiceover from the anime. But they smashed his story at the last minute.

While watching the anime, the music really adds a different flavor to the anime, as if the songs are characters themselves. They tried to imitate the same songs, but they couldn't keep the atmosphere and tone of the anime, and it cause the music remain weak in the background.

That jazz/blues mood in the anime is gone, and ignoring the subtext of the stories was a major factor.
It's like they watched the anime episodes skipping and then shot the Netflix series with what they remembered.
They ignored the important details, background designs, ideas behind the stories and made their own imitations over it.

Ok, I didn't expect to see the exact same show with exactly the same quality. But I expected them to carry the "atmosphere" or "tone" of the anime. Instead, they repeated the same mistake made in the Ghost in the Shell movie adaptation. They tried to carbon copy the same story, the same visuals, the same events, while not understanding why and what the original source intended with those story, visuals, events. And this made the adaptation fail really hard.

A lot of props to John Cho and Mustafa Shakir for their perfomances in this show. They both give the characters some much needed depth. Daniella Pineda as Fay Valentine just doesn't seem like a good casting option. Then again that might just be the way the way the show wrote Fay Valentine......
Which leads to the major problem of this show, the writing. The old anime had a way of knowing what to show and what not to show you. It didn't explain much, but that was part of it's charm and allure. They just seemed to throw all of that out and went for the stereotypical 'let's explain it to the dum-dums'approach. To top that off the show just gets gradually worse untill it just crashes and burns in the final episode. That episode alone would get a solid 1 from me. I don't know what the writes were snorting when they wrote that one, but it must've been something cheap and cut with a lot of washing detergent.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Right off the bat, as an adaptation, there is so much that this series does wrong that there are multiple reasons on why it's being hated by most fans. The cast, the writing, how it deviates from the original plot, etc. Now let me say that hypothetically for someone that has absolutely no idea what Cowboy Bebop is, watching this live-action series as blind as possible will probably end up liking it. Now, for the people that actually watched the original, there is not much to salvage here. Let me say that anime live-action adaptations are essentially death sentences. With the exception of the Rurouni Kenshin movies, practically every other example is entirely detrimental to the source material. In this adaptation, there are things that are being talked like the fact that Jet was black and to be honest, he was IMO the most "decent" out of the whole cast. Sure, he was white in the anime but at least he somewhat made the age resemblance (even though the whole subplot of her daughter was just completely invented). I thought that John Cho was just too old for the role (even though he was ripped) and wasn't someone that resembled his anime counterpart. Faye Valentine was one of the worst offenders because from what I remember, she wasn't that vulgar and annoying in the anime. Making the ridiculous choice to put a lesbian scene on her character absolutely developed nothing besides her newfound discovery of what an orgasm is. Nothing of the sort is ever implied in the anime either. The only episode that somewhat follows the plot of the anime is the first one and even then, it changes quite a lot. The rest of the series is entirely new with a cast of villains that are independent from the original anime. I did like certain things like episode 9 which showed the past of Spike and Vicious and episode 8 which shows Vicious plan come to fruition but besides those few moments, the whole series falls off heavily. The new villains are cheesy but unique and the action is decent. The intro retains the original song but in no way is it better than the original. The gloomy outro of the original is also not present in the same way. Naturally, I don't know what this adaptation is supposed to be. I am not sure if it was even advertised as a 1:1 remake or as an expanded reboot but it definitely did not follow the story at all. The ending was changed heavily, leaving the curtain open for season 2. It's sad that such a masterpiece anime was brought to this level because for fans of the original, this was a disappointment. Considering Watanabe, the original director of the anime, worked as a creative consultant, I sincerely hope they don't mess up the One Piece adaptation. Expand

Basically it is lacking the hearth, charm and soul of the original. Atop of this the characters are also far weaker versions of themselves and they made some harmful changes to them. I think the team behind this show did not understood what made the show so good and well liked or were fully convinced by their own ideas in a way that made them ignore all (valid) criticism. The Cowboy Bebop Anime show is a masterpiece. It is nearly universally loved, has great characters with deep backstories, style, humor, fascinating worldbuilding / lore and great writing. It is the best space western out there and I would recommend this even for people that do not like or ignore Anime shows. Back to this review. Sadly there were many warning signs. The director of the Anime Shinichiro Watanabe warned us that he is unsure if Netflix can do justice to the show, the trailer did not look convincing too and they ranted about the fans which are their main target group. If you liked the original it is hard to watch. There are some changes to the story and characters that will anger you. I must say I blame not the actors as hey are limited by the script and direction or re-imagination to be honest. For example Vicious was one of the best villains of his time. He is a smart, deadly, mysterious and puts fear into all his enemies. If he appeared you did know it gets serious and intense. Here he is ruined. Alone his look made me laugh and he is not intimidating or in the realm where I can see him as menacing villain. Lets go to Julia and I say the changes they did would made a lot of fans rage quit if shown in the first episode. You have been warned spoiler free. Spike and Faye are also more shallow and this is a shame as both actors John Cho and Daniella Pineda are really good. I even think they could work but not as these characters in a Cowboy Bebop adaption. I will praise Mustafa Shakir as Jet. He is awesome. Another point is a character that was missing in the trailers. I think it counts as spoilers so I only say this is the poster-child that not everything can be adapted into a live show. The story itself has some good moments and ideas but also many WTF moments, boring parts, angering parts and is underwhelming. Visually I like the sets and that they try to recreate some shots and moments of the show. However the costumes are annoying. I often heard the remark that they look like badly done cosplay and I see the validity even if it is not garbage. The music is fine for me but did not get as awesome as in the original. Overall I would say do not watch this show and watch the original instead. Sometimes you create something that you cant reach or recreate and the original sets the bars really high. Expand

Unfortunately, trying to replicate an almost perfect animation series in live-action was a monumental task to start. As a cowboy bebop series it's meh. The characters for the most part aren't as developed as the cartoon versions. Jet Black is the exception. I felt his character here is well done and pretty spot on. John Cho does an admirable job trying to get Spike down, but there is just something off about it. There are glimmers of the character there but it's just not as well done. The biggest disappointment is Faye's character. I don't think the portrayal here is anything close to the tone of the cartoon version. The personality of this Faye doesn't seem nearly as damaged or have the weight that we see in the cartoon. I feel like had they made a live-action movie in the Bebop world but not tried to tackle the same characters, they might have had something. There are a lot of bounty hunters in this world and a lot of lore to expand upon. Like always, they try to retread the same ground and end up failing to replicate the same characters in a way that resonates with fans. If you haven't seen the cartoons, then you might like it. I could see people just like it as a sci-fi show if they had no reference to compare it against, but unfortunately that's not me. I love the original series and think it's practically perfect in every way. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Does not feel like an adaptation to the OG series. You do not feel the same attachment to the characters the same the anime did, especially for Faye character which they made like an annoying angsty teen type which I always hate on shows… not sure why Hollywood always insist on adding these character types in movies and shows, but they always end up as the least likeable characters Expand

This is an example of how American west coast people thinks about anime, aiming it to teen 'woke' pc culture for America, missing it the whole point of the series and the world itself, shinichiro Watanabe has an interview where he explains how they didn't give a **** about his notes, and there was no comments from any actors about the characters, looks like they have some pc lines to follow, this proves how us doesn't care about any kind of art, bc lets be real here, r u gonna stop paying Netflix? Bc they already have ur money n they r doing whatever they want, don't let them brain wash ur head, we should start cancelling our subscription to them, then they will feel the hit. Expand

I also found it extremely distracting that they blackwashed a white character only because of their diversity agenda (look at their website, search for Netflix Diversity). So they initially complained about supposed "whitewashing" by Hollywood in anime adaptions when most characters in anime kinda look white (and not Japanese) yet they went ahead and blackwashed a white character because they claimed the actor was the best choice but makes no sense since Jet was the worst character in this entire show by far. Adaption? More like parody. Expand

"Cowboy bebop" the netflix live action is quite literally the epitome of a soulless cash grab for nostalgia that is pandering to people who have no agency in lives and are just consuming corporate cash grab culture to "fit in" with the next shlock that is spewing out of the Netflix garbage machine. As long as they can collect their funko pops and get approval from all their "friends" and "followers" on reddit, tik tok, and otherwise they will love of quite literally anything that comes out of the landfill of despair that is Netflix and Hollywood "recreating" (and failing miserably) iconic media.

If you can sit their and think this drivel is good let alone compares to the original via tone, acting, writing, or frankly any capacity you are delusional or so far removed from any sense of taste it bogles the mind.

The creators of this shot for shot husk should be fired, and Netflix should be banned from ever touching golden age Anime ever again. Unforuntately this will never happen because people like the (at the time of review) 42 approvers of this show are so brain dead or paid off to write positive reviews this will keep happening. over and over and over and over and over until remakes of remakes are being made. Oh wait they are already doing that with Ghostbusters.

The main fault of this series is not in it's accuracy of adaptation - it's the core execution of a competently made show in 2021.

If so.etbi g feels off with the show and you can't quite put your finger on it - it's because the sets are lit awkwardly, a TON of cast is poorly acted and realized, and for some reason (potentially covid) there are far too many scenes between two actors where it's painfully obvious that they aren't in the same room.

From a cinematography standpoint, you can't get lazier than this. Nothing but locked off shots, over the shoulder AB shots, and the odd offlevel shot.

This show feels like a lukewarm attempt at an adaptation, executed in the absolute cheapest way possible. It really needed a different production team and a more focused vision.

If you haven't seen the original - expect a very awkward low budget sci Fi move with an identity crisis.

If you have seen the original, expect the same as above.

This is hollywood doesn’t think people will put money where their mouth is for fantasy/sci fi.

They put in **** casting/writing - go low budget on agi and costumes and set design.

And then when people don’t get to suspension of disbelief - because it takes more effort to get there with these genres - they act surprised when people call a turd a turd.

4 different times in the FIRST episode spike and jet laughed togethor like it was a **** 90s sitcom buddy buddy scene - the fact that they put one of these in much leas four shows how utterly disconnected they are from the source material. the og Bebop is about somber and melancholy topics - which their hopelessness leads to sometimes humorous antics due to their absurdity in the face of existence - with a soundtrack to match.

honestly with the soundtrack the way it is in the first episode - i would be surprised if the execa that greenlit this only watched the opening credits - the entire episode was clearly written by the same guy that writes ninja turtles. its a **** cartoon turned into a live action. Not a cul genre defining anime. Hollywood doesn’t see thw difference. but we do. 0/10. I knew as soon as they released the opening cut scene weeks ago they missed the entire voice and feel of the original - but this is a drop down the stairs abortion of the original content. **** off hollywood - do fantasy/sci fi **** right, or don’t do it all.

It’s fairly entertaining just to pass the time with that being said im angry but more so disappointed that they changed the plot, the audacity!

Jon did a ok job as spike but should have been Keane reeves, jet was the best performance by a landslide and Faye was terribly portrayed to say the least.
Julia performance was also bad they should have casted someone else the same could be said for Faye even Ein did a better job.

Visuals were fine one minute but not the next it’s truly puzzling why this is but that was the least of the problems I had with the show.

As a long time fan of the original anime and anime movie I am truly disappointed in this adaptation and while watching it I feel like there are two people fighting over how to make this show and do the source material justice .

They stole from the anima storylines, characters etc, and changed up a lot if things. I'm only halfway in, so I might need to come back and add to this review later on. So far, I'm OK with the CGI, Spike's and Jet's characters are OK, music is fine. The one thing that makes the show barely watchable is Daniella Pineda's performance. She singlehandedly ruins the show for me to the point that I just want to skip ahead every time she's on screen. She has 0 sex-appeal and that would be the main thing for Faye Valentine, she comes across as **** complaining and fake. I'm not even sure what she wanted to go there, but that's not Faye Valentine, Fake valentine perhaps.. Every time she was on screen I just wanted to stop watching the show.. Side characters are quite OK I think, unlike other YT reviews it didn't bother me that the live action series was not a 1:1 remake. If they would have made a better choice for Faye's character, someone remotely likeable, this would be a fairly good show. Expand

I think it’s pretty obvious at this point that a lot of anime tropes and character styles just don’t work in live action adaptations. This series is pretty faithful to the original and you can tell the creators are fans of the anime, but II think it’s pretty obvious at this point that a lot of anime tropes and character styles just don’t work in live action adaptations. This series is pretty faithful to the original and you can tell the creators are fans of the anime, but I think that faithfulness was its downfall. There are a lot of moments here that just didn’t translate well and came off VERY cringey. It’s not because the scenes were necessarily acted badly or anything like that (matter of fact the cast did their best all things considered) its just that seeing real people act like anime characters is hard to watch. It comes off very stiff and strange. For example, Ed is almost an exact copy of her anime counterpart, but that’s the problem. Ed acts like a total crackhead in the anime, and seeing a real person act like that was extremely hard to watch and made me and my friends visibly recoil from cringe. It felt like we were watching a low budget kids movie when she was on on screen. The story is fine (although they had the audacity to change parts of it), but it’s just overshadowed by laughably awkward dialogue and cringe moments. Expand

I personally were both. I was excited that i could watch cowboy bebop in another way but i also were afraid that they might make a horrible live action like other live actions based on anime. Well i was not wrong to be worry. Cowboy bebop just does not work in real life, all those characters don't belong to real life. A great example is ed, the show introduces ed in the last scene of the show, and ohh boy that's not a good scene to watch at all. the actor is not the problem, to be honest i think the actor does a great job but the main problem is that the ed character does not belong to the real world at all, the way he acts and those face impressions just seems goofy irl. And another big thing for me is they changing some events or characters personalities which does not deliver the true cowboy bebop experience. I'm not gonna end without saying that i enjoyed some moments in the show and that this live action was much better than many other live actions based on anime. Expand

COWBOY BEBOP – NETFLIX REVIEW
Reviewed on 4K

If there is one thing that scare fans of beloved anime series, is the fact that sometimes the source material is not taken into consideration for developing the story and its characters in these adaptations, but thankfully the producers of the show did a fantastic job in not only taking the source material at its core, but adding few extra things to the mix to blend everything and the recipe is a fantastic adaptation if not the BEST adaptation of an anime show ever! Stop reading stupid reviews of people that do not appreciate what has been done in here, you are in for a ride cowboy, and 3, 2, 1, let’s jam!

SETTING
In the not-so-distant future, where intergalactic travel is done thanks to hyperspace engines, the humans have conquered the solar system, establishing colonies in almost all of the planets. Cowboy Bebop setting puts an unlikely trio of space bounty hunters who are always almost short on cash, and hungry by the way, in different stories where their main objective is to capture juicy targets to claim woolongs and live a life!

PERFORMANCES
Ok, this is one of the strongest parts of the show… I was not preoccupied by the show’s cast as, as soon as I saw the trailers, I was thunderstruck with the poignant yet amazing performances of the main cast… My favorite character in the anime is Spike, he is a cool somewhat clumsy guy with a dark past, but he is a total badass in the anime show, and in the adaptation, John Cho has shut a lot of mouths with his performance. He is dark and aggressive (perhaps not as bad ass as his counter part in the show) but he fills the character naturally, and what I love most is that he cares about his partner, something that I thought was not present in the original show. The fighting sequences of Spike are exciting and filled with the anime touch of exaggerating some of the moves and situations, which is what I expect as no anime show does not aggrandize everything it presents… it is what we Otaku people love about anime!
Mustafa Shakir interpretation of Jet Black is so cool, that he is absolutely my favorite character in the adaptation. He was not my favorite character in the original show, but he did such an incredible performance in his role as the leader of the Bebop crew, that I was totally hooked in with him. You will like him as he adds naturally a different but familiar flavor to Jet. He retains his calmed demeanor, and you can clearly see that if Spike is the clumsy one, Jet is the brains of the crew.
And finally, Faye Valentine, which was not my favorite character in the original show, trapped me in such a way, that if I have one complaint about this show is that Daniella Pineda needed to appear more! She is incredible, she added additional value to her character, and I actually love her, the Faye of the show was a bit of stiff and cold, and the worst opportunist ever… instead, in the adaptation, she is pretty much a thief and an opportunist, but she is loveable and tender, something I did not get from the original character. Her performance is great, and I want more of her for season 2. She was THAT good!

VISUALS
I can only say that visually this adaptation has everything: from CGI settings to real toys and my absolute preferred sequences are when they lift off in their ships. For me this was always iconic and when I first saw Spike taking off in the Swordfish, I gave out a smile because I knew at that moment that the show was there to stay with me. The Bebop itself, which is where most of the time the characters hang out is amazing, it is like if they did copy paste the anime show into this scenario. I cannot skip the show’s prelude as the visuals along the music are like watching an anime come to life. It is incredible!

SOUND
Ok, Yoko Kanno returns! Yes, for the ones who do not know her she is a successful Japanese composer who has created a lot of soundtracks for different shows and video games. Her compositions shine along the show, and I cannot see another way of telling us, fans of Cowboy Bebop how much of the source material was included and magnified.

FINAL VERDICT:
My final Verdict is a 10 for this adaptation.
Forget the stupid reviews and let yourself go. The comedy, the thrilling action, the characters, the ships, the space travel, the bounty hunting, the villains, the heroes, and almost everything you saw in the original show is there! John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, and Daniella Pineda made an outstanding job in bringing the original characters to life whilst adding a different flavor which I absolutely adored. I want this show to keep going, please Netflix, let’s jam with more seasons, keep us hooked in, do not pay attention to people who does not fully appreciate what you did here. As a fan of this beloved anime classic, I am open to new ideas, and you rocked this, thank you for this and keep it coming… see you in space cowboys!

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A good adaptation from the original anime, took elements from the original and change it in order to tell a different story. A good step for new anime adaptations.
It has problems of curse like Julia at the end, and sets for a totally different 2nd season from anime.

Are you really upset a show relaunched live action after over 20 years? The show is incredible as it keeps much of the old format alive, I absolutely love it! I want to see more of Spike's story develop, hopefully with more seasons added.

To no surprise when an anime adaptation finally comes closer to getting it right the snobs roll out in droves giving Cowboy Bebop a terrible rating with no real explanation.

As many times I rewatched Cowboy Bebop (anime) I can't say I fully agree with their plot direction here and it becomes more convoluted with rotating directors and writers for each episode. Having said that I actually enjoyed watching these characters and the environment come to life.

The casting was thoughtful and diverse, but lacking with characters here and there. Vicious definitely could've been better and Spike was very loosely adapted but what bothered me most about Spike was how he seemed to lack screen time and diverse scenes.

The visuals are satisfying and don't give a cheap feel, but certain scenes weren't dressed well and there's this radial blur digitized in the picture that Netflix series tend to utilize too much. They took a lot of visual details from the series itself and the paint this universe and time period almost perfectly.

At the end of it all I thoroughly enjoyed it, I just wish a bigger budget was involved here or perhaps a more triumphant company overtook this project. Cowboy Bebop would've been perfect maybe in the hands of production workings under HBO Max or Disney Plus.

This show is like a 7 or 8 out of 10, but I'm giving it a 10 to offset the review bombing from the angry extremist fans of the anime.

As long as you're a fan of the original and you go in with low expectations and know that they ARE going to change/condense stuff because it's 10 episodes rather than 26, it's really not that bad. People are also upset that they changed the plot a bit. What, were you hoping for a shot for shot remake of the original? What would even be the point in doing that? If people cherish the original so much that they just want to see the same scenes all over again, they're certainly free to go back and watch it again. I appreciate that they changed the story up a bit, though I'm a bit lukewarm on the final 10-15 minutes of the finale. Still, it's obvious that they wanted to set this up to continue as a new series that tells new stories for those who are interested. If that's not you, then, I don't know what to tell you. Go back and watch the anime?

As far as the production goes, it was decent for a Netflix show. Some stuff was hokey and I probably would have gone with a younger acter than John Cho for Spike, but he does a good job in the role despite his age. The rest of the cast are more or less average/good (but not great), and the CGI and set pieces are pretty good. The space scenes in particular are pretty nice to look at.

So, yeah, go in with an open mind and lower your expectations. Don't go in thinking, OR wanting, a shot for shot remake and you'll probably at least be moderately entertained. The live action Cowboy Bebop is by no means exceptional, but it's still a fun watch overall.

I want to see the second season but not sure if that will happen from all the negative posts. I would rate this 8 but trying to balance out the 0 ratings which we all know is just nerd babies crying and not honest at all lol. If it did not have to live up the hype of the original they would love it. It's probally the same people on the "Only the original Star Wars is good." Bandwagon. And before the group spouts out any stuff I didn't care for all nine movies but I didn't rate anyone of them a 0 lol. I thought they were all decent movies. Truth is that I did not rate them at all I just want to see the second season and if you the same then rate the series kindly please. Expand

I get it, it didn't capture everything you wanted from a remake, but 0!? That's a sh*tty review. Maybe don't write a review if you can't be even a little impartial.

Though frankly this was kinda inevitable.

I am a huge fan of the orginal. But I didn't want to watch the orginal again with this, or else I would have just sat down with the anime again. I felt I got to see a different perspective on these characters and the world, which just enriched my experience of the cowboy bebop world. Visually, it is undeniably good, imagery had so much style, the actors felt right to that anime/Sin City vibe, and the story was changed enough to keep you guessing if you're an original fan. Honestly, I was expecting to hate this, but was really entertained.

Was it perfect? No. What would that even look like?

But do yourself a favor. Give it a shot, and find out.

The show has it’s atmosphere for sure and the chemistry between Spike and Jet was out there.
Personally hoping for season two.
