But this much is true: Deadwood is cocksure brilliant. David Milch, who put the glory into "NYPD Blue," is clearly and defiantly uninterested in political correctness. He just wants to make a great Western for TV. In that, he's succeeded. [4 Mar 2005, p.E1]
The sheer amount of cussing is so great that even the unoffended may be too distracted by it to pay attention to anything else in Deadwood. That would be unfortunate, because lurking just behind the wall of profanity is a magnificent, fire-breathing work of art - an amazing meditation on violence, social order and the cruel reality of the Wild West. Deadwood will never be everyone's cup of tea, but it stands as one of HBO's most fully realized dramas since "The Sopranos" and exhibits no signs of fading in the second leg of its run. [3 Mar 2005, p.4]
For all the artificiality of the language, there has seldom been a show that felt more authentic.
As it lurches to its conclusion, the politics of "Deadwood" keep growing more dense and colorful, and that magnificent obsession crowds out other primal forces.
Technically, Deadwood is marred occasionally by sloppy continuity. One gaffe occurs after Bullock and Hickok discover the slain pioneer family at night. As they ride back to town with the sole survivor of the crime, darkness suddenly gives way to bright daylight as the rescue party makes a turn in a road. In another scene, Bullock is shown shaving his neck and the sides of his baby face, only to be seen with stubble five minutes later. [21 Mar 2004, p.TV-6]
Yes, "Deadwood" was incomprehensible last season. It is incomprehensible this season. Fans will be delighted.
A high-caliber show in the Wild West with lots to admire. If I were to recommend one Western, this would be it.

The story meanders some, but I have that complaint about a lot of those long series. It is a gritty look at the "Wild West", which is here presented as a very rough place where civilized society had to struggle to get a toehold.

Une série à l’époque de la ruée vers l’or mais aussi éloignée qu’elle peut l’être d’un Bonanza ou d’un western spaghetti ; pas de duels non plus à la OK Corral, non, non : on est ici dans un réalisme saisissant et un portrait sans concession de la vie des pionniers.
Le rêve américain en somme… sauf qu’ici il est particulièrement glauque et souvent scabreux ! Prostitution, drogue (déjà…), jeux d’argent, corruption, mensonges, chantage, magouilles et meurtres très sordides.
A ce sinistre tableau se juxtapose la belle étude de caractère des différents protagonistes : pas de manichéisme réducteur, juste des volontés et des intérêts qui trouvent matière parfois à alliances ou bien à de sévères antagonismes. Les acteurs sont tous exceptionnels.
Quelques reproches tout de même : le rythme général est souvent trop lent, un côté SJW (parfois) et la saison 3 qui appelait une suite s’achève trop abruptement.
