Season 1 Review:
Crudup makes the most of his unconventional cuckold, letting you see how the unexamined privilege of this easy, breezy good guy enables Jean. The surrounding characters lack similar depth, and I wish there were more invention in the filmmaking. Still, Watts has enough shine to make Gypsy a wandering, adventurous character-study worth following.

Season 1 Review:
The glacial pacing prevents any intrigue from building. Despite these drawbacks, the lovely Naomi Watts is able to bring subtle shading (and a great American accent) to the role as Jean’s professionalism is compromised by unconscious motives. It’s too bad the writers haven’t given her better material.

Season 1 Review:
The increasing lack of control that Jean feels and her impulsive seeking of satisfaction of any kind never comes through in Taylor-Johnson’s compositions or in Rubin’s dialogue. ... That being said, with the exception of the oddly innocuous inaugural episode, Gypsy continuously demands attention in its vision of life as performance.

Season 1 Review:
It’s a compelling performance [by Naomi Watts] whose best strength is its bewildering nature. She brings a touch of Hitchcock to the game, even while the show built around her has some shortcomings. ... The ponderous tone does not make the drama any more powerful, alas. Also, some of the secondary characters aren’t developed enough.

Season 1 Review:
While Naomi Watts is a fantastic actress and gives a great effort, her character is so unpleasant and performs a series of irrational acts that she’s challenging to watch. Instead of being risqué, without clarity or a proper protagonist Gypsy is a series that just can’t seem to find its voice.

Season 1 Review:
A psychological thriller of erotic obsession that doesn't lack for (pop) psychology or (repetitive) obsession, but only becomes erotic in the last few episodes and thrilling in the last 15 minutes of the final episode, Netflix's Gypsy is a reasonable star vehicle for Naomi Watts and little else.

Season 1 Review:
Like eating a stale Hydrox cookie when all you want is an Oreo. Combine that lack of inspiration with general Netflix bloat--this thing is 10 hour-long episodes, and its story doesn’t really start until the last five minutes of the whole season--and you have a series that feels like a single-handed indictment of Netflix’s entire creative model.
