Here and Now is franker, more unyielding [than NBC's This is Us] and, as a result, more suited to a tough historical moment. This show’s willingness to go for baroque, adding on oddity with gusto, recalls the best and--in moments--worst of Six Feet Under. That show’s narrative excesses, applied without real purpose, eventually fell flat. But Here and Now sets forth more confidently.
Here and Now suffers from a self-seriousness that's hard not to laugh at--for the wrong reasons. [2/9 Feb 2018, p.97]

This serie seems to be far too good to be successful, to earn great ratings. This story is so overwhelming, gives such a wide perspective on human existence in these confusing times. Each episode surprises the spectator in telling original and provocative stories, it’s a pity the great public seems not to be prepared for this and new insights . Hopefully this serie will prove her values the coming years.

SEASON 1
In the first four episodes, Here and Now suffers from wanting to cover too many topics. By episode four, the characters start to become less annoying, but that's asking viewers to be patient in a world where there are hundreds of other shows to watch. The main problem, in the early going, at least, is that "Here and Now" feels less like a drama with fully developed characters than an essay on The Way We Live Now, with doomstruck observations about the difficulties of finding harmony among races, cultures, genders, and so on.
If HBO was looking for a “This Is Us” with nudity, “Here and Now” is an aimless, unsatisfying result.
Here and Now is so preoccupied with checking off representative boxes that it forgets to whip up actual drama. There's little plot, no aesthetic distinctiveness, and no sense of casualness or specificity to the series.
It’s plenty ambitious, but an ambitious failure, where the more you make like Greg and try to think about what the characters are thinking, the more unbearable most of it becomes.
It’s a domestic drama with unbelievable dialogue, which just makes it as hollow as anything I’ve seen on television in a long time. It’s a show with almost no subtlety and yet almost no plot--which is almost a feat within itself. The real tragedy is that there are beats that are likable--I enjoyed most of the growing relationship between Ramon and Henry, because it felt genuine, but so much of Here and Now does not.
Great new show - packs a lot of potential arcs into first episode to get us involved. The writing is great, the acting superb and the story lines have so many places to go. Finally a show that does not labor the point and becomes such a slow burn that you lose interest. I was immersed strangely in the first episode with elements of Donnie Darko intrigue and West Wing fast paced dialog. Congrats HBO just loved the first episode and am hooked!!!

SEASON 1
Here and Now is complex, with characters who are all thoroughly enmeshed in the plot. The characters are involving and distinctive: we want to know what happens to them. How entertaining would this series be without the supernatural element? Five episodes in, it is still hard to say. My wife and I are really enjoying it, especially the writing. It is a huge improvement over Mr. Ball's True Blood.

Despite the many contrivances of the first episode, a chance was given to this show with the understanding that it was finding its footing. It certainly did, but not for the best, and it decided to double down on its political rhetoric in cartoonishly broad generalizations. The end result is something that plays out like the far left equivalent **** Not Dead movie.

Allen Ball tries so hard to combine family drama, philosophical ideas, supernatural phenomenon, and modern condition all together, but fails miserably to do so. Entire drama feels off the chart and makes people wonder: What is the point of all this? Rather than tackling specific racial, gender or political issues, Ball tries to entertain younger audiences with mysteries and older audiences with drama. However with too many elements going on, the series' central messages are unclear and bland.
