In her enjoyably ridiculous reality show, she's self-consciously restrained, perhaps trying to project old-fashioned noblesse oblige-even while goosing her Google profile with this project in self-exposure. She just ends up neutralizing herself. The show is dominated instead by a supporting group of rich kids who take the reverse tactic of whole-hog shamelessness.

Tinsley turns out to be the least interesting of her horrible crew. She pales in horribleness next to her friends, J.P. Calderon, an accused purse lifter who throws a glass at a woman and his sworn enemy, rich girl Jules Kirby.

The first episode is fairly execrable, but High Society settles down by the second, and we get a clearer--or at least less-boozy--view of Mortimer and her world.
  4. Not all Mortimer's posse seems shallow or unpleasant. But collectively they feel like the characters from all those nasty and wonderful 1960s Rolling Stones songs about neurotic rich girls. If only they were as interesting.

The problem with "High Society" is that we don't love or hate the characters. We just want to shave their heads.
  6. Sorry, Upper East Siders, real society would never be so trashy.
  7. I may just be a cranky old dude, but I am not charmed by this stuff; Spencer Pratt is just a prat to me, and though I wish you well, Tinsley, in your new life, I will be happy to think no more about your friends, starting now.
  8. Clearly, the only function of the show is to make Tinsley (who runs a handbag company) look like a valuable, upright member of society. So that's where the bar is set these days?
  9. These are not people you would love to hate. These are people you would be ashamed to allow in your home--unless their heads were on pikes.
  10. An awful show about awful people.

Posing aside, Jules and Paul are probably right about lacking a censor button, but even 2,500 miles away, I couldn't find the "off" button fast enough.

High Society is absolutely reprehensible, and everyone at The CW should be totally ashamed for putting it on the air.
