In telling a story about a complicated woman through the lens of another complicated woman, Rhimes builds a lot of nuance into the narrative, ensuring the show’s escape from quick and easy judgment.
The modesty of its thematic and narrative ambitions keep Inventing Anna from being a great show. It could have been truly great if it had decided to really be about something, but instead it's content to just be fun. It knows what it is and succeeds at what it sets out to do.

This series is a portrayal of real-life criminal Anna Delvey/ Anna Sorokin. As it isn't a documentary, there's a lot of padding as to be expected to make it more theatrical (this fact is shoved in our faces at the beginning of each episode). The plot and tone isn't consistent, and also, the main character remains so much of an enigma, there's a constant wobble as to how to portray Anna, this could be a plus or minus, depending on how you view it.
Away from the plot, the acting of this series is well-done. Julia Garner delivers a stunning performance as Anna, with her accent that's not consistent, but also plays in theme with her character. The other cast members also delivered brilliantly. The score of the series is also good.
As a series, Inventing Anna does what it sets out to do. It's sure to spark conversation on the various themes that are involved in it.

Like too many streaming series, it trades in efficiency and force for length and reduced churn. Still, there’s a lot to chew on, including a handful of delicacies yet to be so earnestly unearthed in all those other stories of the rich and famous.
In treating Anna with a shrug, Inventing Anna never quite justifies its own existence. Instead, it strings its viewers along with the possibility of reaching some profound revelation, but in the end, it’s a knockoff posing as couture.
[Arian Moayed's] scenes with Garner in the 82-minute (!) finale, which focuses on Anna's trial, are electric — the few moments Inventing Anna lives up to its promise. The rest of the time, the series feels like one extremely long con.
Inventing Anna careens all over the place, and one of its only consistencies is an exhausting insistence that Delvey was talented but misunderstood.
A series as intellectually empty, structurally disjointed and just badly written as “Inventing Anna” can’t help feeling like a con, too.

I decided to watch this miniseries because I wanted to see Julia Garner's performance, and that alone is what made me get to the end of it, because overall, the drama itself felt too bland and uninspired. Besides, with this miniseries, plus The Tinder Swindler and Hulu's upcoming miniseries, The Dropout in which Amanda Seyfried will play Elizabeth Holmes, I'm really getting tired of these production companies providing such great showcases for those who ultimately are nothing more than thieves and con artists.

Just like it's subject matter, this feel like's a con.
The further I continued with this series the less I cared about it's conclusion. What tries to be some sort of profound ending, is just flat, and it doesn't help when all the lead characters are despicable in some capacity.

Other then the story, it’s a complete trainwreck. Weak acting, weak editing, over drawn and out drawn narratives. Would not recommended yet another over hyped piece of trash. Pass on this and read the news articles if the story interests you. Even the story is lame, anticlimactic and uninspiring.
