One of the benefits of watching LeBlanc keep his character afloat is that it's all comfortable. Not always funny, mind you, but an easy 22 minutes.

Groundbreaking it's not ... With its laugh track and punchline pauses, bite-size stories and strange, frozen moments where the characters all stare at each other before a commercial break, Joey is, to its core, a traditional sitcom. But so was Friends. Each works because of its witty comedic cast and producers.

Eu amo o Joey. Este spin-off da série icónica e popular "Friends" é bom e divertido. A história não é nada de especial, mas também dá para entreter durante várias horas. Só acho que faltou um pouco mais de emoção e de amor à série.

Deftly written, Joey sets up running gags and delayed payoffs with the precision of the special forces laying mines, much as Friends did. No, exactly as Friends did, and that's a problem. It reminds us that five-sixths of the Dream Team is missing. And where Joey does change, it's abruptly and implausibly.

While ‘Joey’ delivers dashes of funny humour, it lacks the heart and sense of relatability that made its mother show ‘Friends’ such a timeless show.

Creating a spin-off from a popular series is always a risky proposition and it can be difficult to retain the charm of the original series whilst also providing something new to make viewers want to reinvest in a character all over again. Matt Le Blanc has certainly always brought a certain amount of charm to the character of Joey Tribbiani but whereas Frasier, arguably the greatest spin-off of all time, allowed for the exploration of a fairly unknown character from Cheers it is difficult to believe we can learn anything more about a character most viewers have spent ten years watching. The biggest problem for me however was that I watched most episodes expecting to see Chandler, Ross, Monica, Phoebe and Rachel walk through the door at any moment. For six people who were such close friends it is difficult to believe they would not visit and the supporting cast simply do not have the charm and comic timing of his long term pals from New York. Its not all bad of course, there are certainly some humorous scenes throughout this first season, but for me Joey remains a spin-off that simply wasn't needed.
