Fox’s new comedy-drama Lucifer has a similar premise [as "Death Takes a Holiday and "Meet Joe Black"], but without the sap and more zip and lip. But (and you saw this coming), the devil is in the details.... Uneven but mostly fun.
The conventional crime-time format incinerates everything strange and spirited about the concept, and Lucifer’s cop partner (Lauren German)--the female wet blanket to his male rogue--is a trope that needs to go to hell.
There’s nice but predictable chemistry between Ellis and German, and although Fox only made one episode available to critics, the show’s concept is so obvious, it’s easy to see exactly where this will go, unless it gets canceled first.
The show's creators have replaced the original Lucifer with neither a counterpoint nor an interesting abstraction. Instead, they've simply shaped yet another paean to the perfect dude, who can carry on a lewd, open affair with his psychiatrist, play matchmaker with Dancer and her ex, and solve every major crime that the LAPD is called in for.
Turning Lucifer into "The Mentalist" with slightly more CGI seems a waste of the character Gaiman and Carey made so vivid, but it still could have led to a decent show. This is just awful.
Lucifer is my favorite new show of 2016 and one of my favorite shows of all time. Tom Ellis's performances as Lucifer Morningstar is exceptional, he is hilarious, cool, charming, and also gives a very deep and complex performance and he gives the best portrayal of the devil I have ever seen. The casts chemistry is phenomenal they just play off of each other perfectly. The supporting performances are stupendous especially from Lesley-Ann Brandt, Lauren German, Rachael Harris, Scarlett Estevez, Kevin Rankin, and D.B. Woodside The writing is excellent. The concept of Lucifer the devil struggling with good and evil, beginning to want to be reformed and a good person, and showing signs of remorse, humanity, empathy, and love and caring for others is remarkable. The visual effects are superb especially Lucifer when he shows himself as the devil, when Maze shows herself as a demon, and when Amenadiel shows his wings, the visual effects are so cool and awesome. The costumes are outstanding especially on Tom Ellis and Lesley-Ann Brandt. The music choices were fantastic and they fit perfectly in the show. The makeup and hairstyling was terrific especially on Lesley-Ann Brandt, Rachel Harris, and Lauren German. An overall pretty perfect season, I would say an A+ first season.
What the show has in character's immersion and working out for him characteristics, sins in stories' creativity. Every episode is extremely repetitive. Until 1st season, it doesn't even bother so much, but in posterior seasons makes you want to left show behind and stop watching.
Average direction, Actors are good in general. Tom Ellis is particularly great. Some characters are kind of boring or underexploited (Amenadiel). There's also a great lack of supernatural stuff. But it's good stuff overall.
This is very loosely based on the adult oriented DC Comics series of the same name. How loosely? It takes the names of some characters and their relationships to one another from the books. It doesn't bother with appearances, personalities, or abilities.
This is bad enough, but the show has to insult viewers with tropes and cliches piled high: police procedural, consulting detective, buddy cop show, sexual ****'s like ripping off 'Castle', 'Elementary', and 'Sherlock', but calling the non-cop "Lucifer".
Also, Lucifer, The Devil Himself, is not evil; he's smarmy. Rather than having no conscience, he's merely narcissistic.
If the show isn't slated for cancellation before the end of its season I'll be surprised.
The premise of the show was one with promise: The Lord of Hell visiting the streets of LA, solving crimes, etc. But so far it's been dull. Sure, there's neat stuff going on but it fails to engage the viewer. Tom Ellis' smart-ass portrayal of Satan is entertaining for the first 20 minutes, but soon becomes an annoying attempt to rehash the same jokes about how he's the devil.
