The fourth season effectively channels the raw vitality of WTF’s early days, when Maron was trying to dig his way out of a hole by embracing the world around him instead of pushing it away.
Marc still has all the bite he did in the past, still doesn’t suffer fools gladly, and still neurotically struggles with pride, masculinity and maturity; all this tinged with a new sadness that comes after a fall from success. For those who don’t know the show but appreciate comedy that doesn’t shy away from reality’s occasional harshness, add Maron to your watchlist.
Maron is short, funny and coherent.
Maron is his own acerbic, sad-sack self, and his new show is worth a look.
Based on a preview of four episodes, the second season of Maron will be as laid-back and lighthearted as the first.
[The premiere episode] begins with some decent gags (Maron wanting to profess his love with a toe ring!) before he gets to groaners.
The acrimony between the two men [Marc Maron and his father] doesn’t register as funny or entertaining. Louis C.K. has shown us, on “Louie,” what sort of deeper meaning can be mined in such deep contempt, but on Maron it just feels ugly and dull.
