Season 1 Review: "The Runaways are figuring out, though, what every superhero team does: They’re stronger together than apart. And the family that they make with each other is better than the one they already have. It’s clear where they’re headed, but this series offers a fascinating and surprisingly funny path for them to get there." ... Read full review

Season 2 Review: "The season rolls along in a snappy but not especially comprehensible jumble. It’s not boring, but it’s not as gripping as it could be, either. Compared with the stilted, motionless season one, season two of Runaways is a definite improvement. If the show could bring itself to ditch the parents as well as its teen protagonists did, it could be even better." ... Read full review

Josh Bell | Nov 16, 2017
Season 1 Review: "Sometimes the sheer number of characters gets a bit unwieldy, and the interpersonal drama is less thrilling than the prospect of colorful superhero action (which goes mostly unfulfilled in the first four episodes). But the teen characters are likable and grounded, and worth watching even when they aren’t tapping into their superpowers." ... Read full review

Season 1 Review: "It’s a show that’s not very dramatic, not very melodramatic, and not very funny. Even after four episodes, the characters still feel thinly drawn and we don’t have sympathy for anyone in the cast. " ... Read full review

This show is a pretty decent story and the idea of following kid superheroes is very fun.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a perfunctory teen superhero soap. It's not terrible, but it's not great. There is a novel contrast between a group of close teenage kids in conflict with their privileged parents grouped out of vague necessity and greed.
However the show really falls apart in plot and motivation. Towards the end of the first season several characters start making some wild and polarised decisions just because we need to move the plot in a particular direction (e.g. Who gets in the pod to save Victor Stein and why's it so critical - in the end "no one" and "it's not").

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. About the best that can be said about this show is that the characters mostly look like who they are. However, there if there were a word that I could use to characterize how this show changes the source material to forge its own identity, that word would be "Unnecessary". Or perhaps it would be "Why"...

Why did Molly's parents need to be killed in backstory?
Why is the actor family now a weird expy for Scientology instead?
Why did a character who was absolutely ruthless in the comics get chosen as the "conscience" for the villains?
Why was a completely original character introduced, just to be fridged at the start of the show as justification for things no one needed justified?
Why, did the creators decide to remove any and all elements of magic from the story and replace them with sci-fi technobabble?

All in all, this adaptation doesn't add anything to the story that's worth the price of a Hulu subscription, and what it takes away creates something less than what was there before.
