The grim goings-on and generally sour worldview that Mayor of Kingstown established with its first season have not abated with the arrival of its second. But nor has the fine acting and character work that exists in its many one-on-one moments. Read full review

Alas, as Mike’s actions suggest, show and character alike seem instead to find more narrative interest in (re)establishing well-worn plots about feuding gangs and violent power grabs. The show is aiming for the dramatic heights of The Wire and The Shield but falls short. The performances are decent – particularly Taylor Handley as Mike’s police officer brother – and the plotting is assured. But it is undone by the violence for violence’s sake. Read full review
